๐ฅ A huge shoutout to the Women+ Fire cohort out of Appalachian Conservation Corps for their incredible service as they work in and around New River Gorge National Park and Shenandoah National Park! ๐ฒ These trailblazers are working hard on the frontlines of wildland firefighting and natural resource management, protecting our public lands while gaining essential hands-on experience and certifications. From tackling tough terrain and extreme conditions to managing wildfire risks, theyโre going above and beyond in their service. This program not only prepares them for careers in firefighting, but also connects them with federal employees and equips them with the tools to navigate the federal land management system! Incredible work!! ๐ช๐ฅAppalachian Conservation Corps - We are SO excited to celebrate Kristian Broche, an Individual Placement currently serving his second term with our program, who was just awarded a Service Year Alum Award! This award celebrates corps members who went above and beyond to bridge divides across lines of difference. Kristian's goal was to bridge cultural and linguistic divides between Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park and local Latino communities. By creating bilingual boat tours and culturally relevant activities, Kris connected Latino families with the parkโs history, fostered inclusion and a sense of belonging, and enriched the parkโs engagement with a broader audience. This approach not only encouraged a more diverse visitor base but also enhanced the parkโs role as a shared space, fostering a sense of community among all visitors. You can read more about the great work Kris has done during his two terms here --> https://ow.ly/obBE50Txr9nAs Service Year Alums Awards recipients, these corps members came together across divides to listen and understand, to find common ground, build relationships, and to make collaboration the norm. Congratulations to all of this yearโs award recipients! Follow Service Year Alliance to meet this yearโs awardees and learn more. #ServiceYearAwards #BridgingDivides

Last Friday I completed my term with Appalachian Conservation Corps as one of their Education & Interpretation Individual Placements in Shenandoah National Park. Returning to the Blue Ridge Mountains this past 6 months has felt like a full-circle moment. In this role, I have been able to have conversations about the rich biodiversity of the region I call home while building my skills of educating about and interpretating the natural world. One of my most treasured take-aways from my time is my relationships with my fellow young land stewards and educators. I am inspired and empowered everyday by sharing an office space or the great outdoors with all of you wonderful folks! A special thank you to Margo Roseum for serving as my supervisor throughout my term. Whether sheโs fighting literal or figurative fires, Margo always had time to counsel and coach me. Additional thank you to the following organizations for supporting this internship opportunity Conservation Legacy AmeriCorps National Park Service The Shenandoah National Park Trust SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK ASSOCIATION - Appalachian Conservation Corps reposted this

"I had this vision of working in the environmental field in my summers during college. But I was honestly a little afraid of actually doing it. Now I feel like I actually have like a foot in the door. Like, lookโฆ I did it and now I can keep working in conservation at least every summer for now. And then I'll see where I am after four years of college!" - Trailblazers Member Nava Khurgel We are thrilled to see the next generation of conservationists in action with the Trailblazers program in Charlottesville, VA! This youth program, in partnership with Shenandoah National Park Trust, Rivanna Trails Foundation, Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Club, and Community Attention Youth Internship Program (CAYIP), has put together a youth crew to work on local trails in the area. After 5 weeks of trail work the crew members will then have a immersive three-day program at Shenandoah National Park. The hope being, this summer program will be a foot in the door into the corps model and potential future careers in land management/outdoors!
