AHL is a multi-disciplinary architecture firm with local and international experience to deliver the full spectrum of design services to best serve the places and spaces in which we live, work, and play. Founded in 1946 in Waikiki, Hawaii, AHL brings a breadth of expertise in architecture, interior design, planning, sustainable/resilient design, historic architecture, and existing building services. We believe in design that respects our past while contributing to a better future in Hawaii with projects in healthcare, education, residential, commercial, retail, military, industrial, and institutional sectors. Lee, the interior designer for this project (and husband and wife!), represented AHL at the blessing, welcoming the community into a space where thoughtful design meets cultural inspiration. Revitalizing Downtown: The Transformation of 1060 Bishop The heart of Honolulu’s urban core welcomes a new era of vibrant downtown living with the debut of 1060 Bishop—a transformative example of adaptive reuse, bringing 51 beautifully designed affordable housing units to the intersection of the Central Business District and historic Chinatown. Led by Design Principal Lester Ng and Director of Interior Design Colette A. Lee, the team preserved the building’s historic facade, crafting an urban sanctuary that harmonizes with neighboring architecture and celebrates the blend of old and new. Inside, thoughtful design elements inspired by the contrasting styles of Chinatown and the Central Business District come to life. Black metal, artisanal tile, warm woods, and metallic accents strike a balance between modern and historic charm. The striped floor tiles mirror city sidewalk crossings, and the original grated door panel near the elevators pays homage to the building’s past. 'Decorative lighting is like jewelry for an interior,' says Colette, reflecting on the street lamp-inspired fixtures that add historic charm to a contemporary setting. The units themselves embrace the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi—the appreciation of beauty that is ‘imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.’ Exposed concrete contrasts with smooth finishes, capturing the essence of downtown’s diverse character. Each unit is designed with a modern, neutral, minimalist aesthetic, featuring quartz countertops, luxury vinyl, porcelain tile, and sleek black fixtures. Two unique layouts add versatility, creating spaces that balance refined elegance with a natural, authentic edge. Join us in celebrating the revitalization of our downtown community! Transforming Waikīkī! The 2181 Kalākaua project redefines urban design at one of the area’s most vibrant intersections. We collaborated closely with Dior to draw inspiration from local culture, crafting an authentic architectural identity. Together, we designed the retail core and renovated the facade, ensuring compliance with Waikīkī’s design guidelines. Our ADA-compliant streetscape improvements enhance access to the plaza, fostering a welcoming pedestrian experience.
