Having worked at Sears Holding Management Corp. and built the Shop Your Way Rewards program across all BUs teaming with many brilliant people, I know first hand how passionate the brand teams were to achieve success in a tough competitive environment while supporting "aging" brands. > HR hired awesome, dedicated people. > The problem at SHMC in a nutshell was NOT that Sears, Kmart, Sears Automotive, Sears Hardware and the individual BU leadership, nor the solid team in Financial Card Services didn’t listen to its customers as was shared in the RetailWire discussion. > The core blocker was that ESL didn’t listen to his people. He saw little value in an investment to re-fresh the physical store, the in-store shopping experience (except for Hardware new concepts) and naturally loved e-commerce (emulating Jeff Bezos I might add). ESL was against any investment in the physical shopping experience (let alone fixtures and paint were from the 70's), refused to pay his best floor salespeople in hard goods a commission and let them go to greener pastures, and so the rest is history. > We signed up 150,000,000+ members and were judged the best loyalty program in the world in 2011. It was the driving force for the business, highlighted by ESL during investor calls. We could not have done it without brilliant marketers, my team of CRM/Loyalty professionals, agency partners and more. > So tired of commentators putting the blame for a "brand" that had at one time 4,400 stores, 55Binsalesandstocksellingat55B in sales and stock selling at 55Binsalesandstocksellingat120/share when I joined in July 2008. Place the blame somewhere else, as it was not the recession. It had much to do with a lack of commitment from the very top, and the fact that Sears stores were at the “old”/dead end of the mall, and thus traffic was weak vs. instead heading over to the new/cool side of the mall where Nordstrom or Macy’s had taken hold. > Kmart met the needs of its under served population. I just love how different research firms put out reports based on their "assessment" as to how well certain technology companies do or do not deliver successfully for clients. Have they ever run a program - no. Have they ever sourced these companies via RFI/RFP, built the solution from scratch and then launched it as side by side partner - no. > Big question...to what extent is success determined not by the service solution, feature/functionality and price : value, but rather what sector the client operates in, how well the loyalty design/strategy and operating model is built and of course who is driving the program day to day. > Our firm Ascendant Loyalty Marketing has led clients using our Loyalty Leaders proven approach for the past 6 years with great success.
