Barclays Investment Readiness index tells us that only one in ten people feel investing is for “people like them”. For households across the UK, a savings buffer is essential, but excess savings could be made to work harder if they were invested. Supporting people to feel more confident to invest could help them benefit from long-term investment returns that could help achieve their goals, while also improving the vibrancy of capital markets. This change marks an important step on our strategy and reinforces our commitment to backing the UK’s future by supporting individual prosperity and unlocking growth.
From today, customers of Barclays Direct Investing - the new name for Smart Investor - will no longer pay a monthly customer fee, regardless of how much they invest. Around 15 million UK adults are holding more than £610bn in excess cash, money that could be supporting long‑term goals like retirement, home ownership or financial security. Research shows that when it comes to investing, cost matters, with nearly 4 in 10 UK adults saying low fees and charges are the key factor in choosing an investment platform. That is why we are making this change. It marks another step in demonstrating to households across the UK that investing is for “people like them”. At Barclays, we are committed to helping people invest with clarity and confidence in the interest of both individual financial wellbeing and to UK growth, and I am proud that we are taking a meaningful step to making investing more accessible. It is another way Barclays is backing your future. I sat down with Mohammad Kamal Syed and Sid Azad to talk about why we must give more people the tools, knowledge and confidence to start investing.
Today, much of the energy our economies rely on still comes from conventional sources. And while the transition to cleaner energy is underway, it won’t happen overnight. At Barclays, we are supporting both conventional and clean energy. Because powering today’s economy, while helping to drive the energy transition, is how we back progress.
