- We had the pleasure of hosting a brown bag lunch at the Permanent Representation of Belgium to the European Union, with the Analysis & Research Team (ART) of the Council of the European Union. The discussion was led by Marlene Erll, Charles de Marcilly and Salvatore Finamore, bringing together our Permanent Representative, Deputy Permanent Representative, as well as a wide range of colleagues from various policy teams. The briefing presented key elements of the "Forward Look 2026" and focused on the main structural trends shaping the EU’s strategic environment. Discussions covered a possible geopolitical reshuffle in an increasingly fragmented international system, the normalisation of confrontation and the blurring of boundaries between war and peace, ongoing transformations of the global trading system, mounting pressures surrounding the green transition, and the growing impact of political polarisation and societal tensions within and beyond Europe. The exchange provided a valuable opportunity to step back from short-term developments and reflect on longer-term dynamics, helping to frame risks, constraints and strategic choices ahead. Many thanks to the ART team for a rich and thought‑provoking discussion, and to colleagues for the engaged and substantive exchange of views. 📜 You can read the 'Forward Look 2026' here: https://lnkd.in/erAJp-e4
- 👋 Have you already met Félix, Armela and Hanaa, our new Bernheim trainees? After spending five months at the Directorate‑General for European Affairs and Coordination at SPF Affaires étrangères, Commerce extérieur et Coopération au Développement, they’re now supporting the work of the Permanent Representation in various fields. 🤝 Félix is working with our COEST (Eastern Europe and Central Asia) and COHOM (Human Rights) team. He has a background in law and political science from Saint-Louis University (and KU Leuven) and Ghent University, and European politics at the Institute for European Studies at ULB. He gained practical experience through CIVIX and internships at a law firm, the Chamber of Representatives and the European Parliament. He’s also a big music lover and, after many years in scouting, he definitely knows how to keep the right rhythm, both on the trail and at work. 🎵 Armela is part of the COAFR (Africa) Working Party and contributes to our European Parliament team. After her Master’s degree at UGent, she graduated from the College of Europe with Master’s in European Interdisciplinary Studies. With her background in public administration, she’s interested in a wide range of policy areas. An avid reader in her free times, she says that if she were a book, she’d be ‘Humans of New York’ — always drawn to honest, moving stories. 📚 Hanaa has joined the MaMa (Mashreq/Maghreb) and MOG (Middle East/Gulf) team. After completing a Master’s in International Relations and Diplomacy at the University of Antwerp, she went on to pursue an LLM in International and European Law at VUB. Before that, she studied Political History at the University of Antwerp, which sparked her early interest in international politics and diplomacy. Outside work, she loves to travel – especially around the Mediterranean and the Levant. Give her a coastline and some palm trees, and she’s in her happy place. 🌴

Yesterday, at the informal European Council in Alden Biesen, the 27 EU leaders reached broad agreement on three urgent priorities for Europe’s competitiveness. First, we must bring down energy costs for our industry - including through reform of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS). Europe cannot remain a global economic power if our companies are structurally disadvantaged. Second, we will pursue far-reaching administrative simplification. Our entrepreneurs should spend their time innovating and creating jobs - not navigating unnecessary layers of regulation. Third, we will strengthen the protection of our European market against unfair trade practices. Openness must go hand in hand with fairness. The European Commission has been tasked with presenting a concrete roadmap by the formal European Council in March. The ambition is clear: deliver tangible results in the short term. The discussions also went beyond the immediate. In the longer term, Europe must evolve from a common market to a true One Market in savings and investments, telecom and energy. These are domains where scale is power and therefore integration is strength. We will strive to move forward with all 27 Member States, starting with pilot projects. If unanimity proves impossible, functional integration - with a frontrunner group of willing Member States - must allow progress. Europe cannot afford paralysis. If we implement what we agreed in Alden Biesen, this summit may one day be remembered as an important turning point - the moment we made the mental shift toward a genuine One Market that strengthens our prosperity and strategic autonomy. But history is not written by intentions. It is written by execution. Time for action.

Celebrating 50 years of the #Antici group, a cornerstone of European diplomacy 🇪🇺 But who/what are Anticis??? 🧐 These diplomats work in the shadows to align positions, connect people, think ahead and prepare the meetings of the ministers and ambassadors. 🇧🇪 Meet Belgium’s current Antici Hendrik Roggen, and one of his famous predecessors: Belgian minister for security and home affairs Bernard Quintin. And all the others: Stefanie van Melis, Nico Van Dijck, Bart Vodderie, Stijn Mols, Didier Vanderhasselt, Marc Calcoen, Vincent Mertens de Wilmars, Johan Verbeke, Dirk WOUTERS… - Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming more than 70 Belgian trainees currently completing their internships within the EU institutions: European Commission, Council of the European Union, European Parliament, European External Action Service, European Committee of the Regions,... The day started with an introduction to the role and missions of the Permanent Representation, followed by dynamic “speed-dating” sessions with 12 colleagues from diverse policy areas such as energy, environment, digital, defence, justice, industry… representing the Belgian federal level and the regions of Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels. These exchanges offered a unique opportunity to better understand how Belgium’s voice is represented in Brussels and to connect directly with experts, diplomats and Ambassadors. The event concluded with a networking evening hosted by our Permanent Representative, Ambassador Peter Moors. ✔️ Professional careers often begin with motivation, cooperation, knowledge, solidarity and networking – and this day was all about that. A big thank you to all participants for their enthusiasm and curiosity. We look forward to seeing many of you shaping Belgium and Europe’s future
