Today, MOPAN shared preliminary findings with International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC in Geneva and had an open and constructive dialogue on the organisation’s performance journey, key strengths, areas for improvement, and considerations for future strategic trajectories. Stay tuned for the full assessment, launching in September. Special thanks go to International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC Director General Pierre Krähenbühl for hosting the meeting; and to Ambassador Christophe Payot of Belgium and Ambassador Erica Schouten of the Netherlands, supported by Versailles Benedicte, Lisa Bakels and Veronika Flegar, serving as Institutional Leads. We appreciate the engagement by Olivier Ray and Sophie Orr at ICRC, with Jo Kaybryn, focal point for this assessment, supported by Darren Ou Yong.
`` - 🇧🇪 remains more than ever a strong partner of the World Health Organization.
Productive bilateral meeting between the Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation, Maxime Prévot, and Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director‑General of the World Health Organization. This exchange reaffirmed Belgium’s strong and sustained commitment to WHO — the cornerstone of the global health system — at a time of mounting global health challenges and increasing pressure on multilateral organisations. Belgium has made a clear strategic choice to step up its support, including increased contributions to key programmes such as the TDR Special Programme on tropical diseases and the HRP Research Programme on sexual and reproductive health, while maintaining its efforts towards equitable access to medicines and stronger health systems. The discussion also highlighted the importance of advancing an ambitious reform of the Global Health Architecture. In an increasingly complex and fragmented landscape, Belgium supports a central role for WHO as the leading normative authority and coordinating platform — with stronger leadership, enhanced coherence and governance grounded in equity, solidarity and human rights. From Geneva — at the heart of global health diplomacy — Belgium remains committed to building effective multilateral solutions for a healthier, more resilient world.#GlobalHealth #WHO #Geneva #Multilateralism #Belgium #HealthDiplomacy #StandWithSciencePhoto credit: Christopher Black / WHO - Productive bilateral meeting between the Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation, Maxime Prévot, and Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director‑General of the World Health Organization. - Today, we were delighted to welcome our Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Development Cooperation, Maxime Prévot for the Universal Periodic Review of 🇧🇪 ! #UPR52
Today in Geneva, I represented Belgium for its 4th Universal Periodic Review at the UN Human Rights Council. An exercise where every UN member state has its human rights record examined by its peers. All 193 countries, on equal footing. Some might ask: why would a country voluntarily submit itself to scrutiny? Because that is exactly the point. Speaking openly about where we fall short is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of confidence in the system we helped build. If we ask others to uphold human rights, we must be willing to hold ourselves to the same standard. Human rights are in Belgium’s DNA. The universality, indivisibility and interdependence of human rights are the guiding principles of everything we do, at home and on the international stage. This review, based on the follow-up of 251 recommendations accepted in 2021, is how we turn that commitment into accountability. In a world where the very concept of universal rights is under pressure, exercises like the UPR matter more than ever. -

Ambassador Christophe Payot extended Belgium's warmest congratulations 👏 to Mr. Daren Tang for his appointment for a second term as Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO for the period 2026-2032. This renewed support and the outstanding election result at the 12 February Coordination Committee stand as a clear testament to the confidence that Member States placed in his leadership. Belgium values Mr. Tang's vision for a modern and impact-driven Organization — one that strengthens the multilateral system and delivers tangible benefits to all Member States. We look forward to continuing this constructive partnership under his renewed leadership. - Permanent Representation of Belgium to the UN & other International Organizations in Geneva reposted this
From Classroom to Collider: Belgian Physics Teachers Dive into Particle Physics at CERN The Belgian Teacher Programme at CERN, held this week, marked the first national edition since 2013 — an important milestone for Flanders and its strong commitment to STEM education. The programme was developed by CERN, in collaboration with the diplomatic mission of Flanders and Wallonie- Bruxelles and various teacher training institutions and Universities, coordinated through Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven). Through lectures, on-site visits, exhibitions, and hands-on workshops, the participants were introduced to cutting-edge particle physics, enabling them to return to their countries as ambassadors who inspire the next generation of physicists, engineers, and IT specialists. Their participation reflects not only a high level of professional dedication, but also a genuine passion for inspiring the next generation in science. In recognition of their efforts, the Delegations of Flanders and Wallonie-Bruxelles hosted a reception at the beautiful premises of the Belgian residence, also providing a valuable opportunity to hear firsthand about the participants’ experiences and insights from the programme. We extend our sincere thanks to CERN for the excellent organisation of the programme and for its continued commitment to knowledge sharing and multidisciplinary collaboration.CERN Wallonie-Bruxelles à Genève Permanent Representation of Belgium to the UN & other International Organizations in Geneva Sofie Ravaglia Flanders Chancellery and Foreign Office Hanne DeprezMieke De Cock
