💡 As healthcare costs rise, purchasers are spending more to provide health insurance coverage for the people they serve. By enabling primary care providers to communicate electronically with specialists, eConsults have the potential to reduce spending in commercial populations without negatively impacting quality—improving the affordability and efficiency of the healthcare system. As part of our work to identify and scale strategies to manage healthcare costs and improve affordability, in 2021, the Center launched a pilot with Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Mathematica to assess whether the positive impact of eConsults could be replicated in a commercially insured population. A rural state with specialist access constraints, Arkansas was chosen for the pilot due to its history of participating in primary care practice transformation efforts.
