About us
Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is guided by the belief that architecture transforms communities and inspires people. Founded in 2000 in the heart of Washington, DC, we are a firm of 30 highly-qualified and creative architects and designers - problem-solvers who thrive on finding innovative solutions to the challenges of cities and neighborhoods. We are passionate about the power of architecture to uplift and revitalize the physical environment and the economic and social conditions of our world. We operate in a collegial studio environment: each team member participates in all aspects of project design, development and execution. An open discussion of architectural ideas and client solutions is valued and encouraged. Our staff works on diverse projects, ranging in size and complexity from residential renovations and adaptive use to large-scale, commercial and mixed-use developments. Our team lives and works in the neighborhoods in which our projects are built. Partners and team members give back to the community through teaching and involvement in local professional, civic and volunteer organizations. This ethos of community involvement is encouraged at every level. We believe that architecture should be expressive of its time, fulfill client and community aspirations, respond appropriately to its physical context, and inspire the public by being memorable and creative. We are inspired by challenging site constraints, thoughtful restoration, adaptive use of existing buildings, contemporary design and modern insertion in historic fabric. Our work catalyzes, revitalizes and sustains environments ranging from urban neighborhoods to rural landscapes. We create bold, modern, visually expressive buildings that complement their surroundings and raise the aspirations of the public and our profession.

- In collaboration with conservator Amanda Edwards, PA-AIC, David Haresign, FAIA, led an AIA accredited tour of the historical Cosmos Club building for the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA). Designed by Carrere & Hastings, the Cosmos Club building was originally constructed as a private residence for Mary Scott Townsend in 1901 and was purchased by the Club in 1952. With a Beaux-Arts exterior and elaborate interior finishes, the Cosmos Club Historic Preservation Foundation has provided thoughtful stewardship of the historic building over the years. As the Immediate Past President of the Cosmos Club Historical Preservation Foundation (CCHPF), David brought a wealth of knowledge on the architectural significance and design of the building, as well as the methodical approach to historical preservation. Recent restoration projects have focused on the exterior envelope and Warne Ballroom, requiring detailed analysis of the causes of water infiltration, the use of laser scanning, conservation testing and in-depth research into the historic finishes and materials. Thank you to the CCHPF and the ICAA for the opportunity to share this rich piece of DC architectural history! #TownsendBuilding #ArchitectureHistory #DCArchitecture

We are honored to announce that the Kanawha has been awarded a Merit in Extended Use: Historic Preservation by AIA Virginia! From a field of 143 entries, only 19 were selected by the jury for recognition. The jury noted that they appreciated the careful preservation of the street façade and the beautifully detailed contemporary rear face which relates to the historic structure through its sense of scale, craft and care. The Kanawha is a completely restored contributing historic apartment building located within the Georgetown Historic District. Originally built in 1901, this colonial revival building was one of the earliest purpose-built apartment buildings in Georgetown, built for a rapidly growing population at the turn of the century. After receiving approval from the Old Georgetown Board of the Commission of Fine Arts, this long-neglected building received a major renovation and restoration creating modern luxury apartments. As part of the renovation/restoration, the building was stripped to its original masonry walls and wood floor joists. The ground floor was excavated to increase the floor to ceiling height and extend the floor area into the rear yard. A new rear addition was surgically inserted on the rear façade in place of the existing full width wrought iron balcony. The front façade, with expressive masonry arches and herringbone brick patterns, was repointed and the iron fire escapes along Dumbarton Street were removed as allowed by the current fire codes when the building was fully sprinklered. Congratulations to our client Hedden Residential Property Trust, general contractor Harbor Builders, consultant partners including architectural historian EHT Traceries Inc, our consulting engineers, and our talented team at Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS for this incredible recognition!
