It has been such a hard week for most of the people of Western North Carolina due to hurricane Helene. Duke Energy has been hard at work, restoring customers in this area and throughout the Carolinas and Florida. I had the opportunity to spend most of the week in Hot Springs, North Carolina, working on restoring our microgrid and then operating it daily. When the substation that fed the town was washed away by the floods, we were blessed to have the opportunity to prove the value of this inverter only based microgrid. Using only batteries and solar, we have been able to power the downtown area of Hot Springs continuously since Wednesday morning. Depending on solar output, we’ve also been able to bring on other load segments for periods of time. Our crews are working around the clock to ensure that all of our customers are taking care of during this terrible time. In light of Breast Cancer Awareness month, I thought I’d share this photo of my mother and her dear friend Suze Orman on stage, raising money for the cause at the 2010 Avon Walk on behalf of my sister Leah (cool girl on the big screen). It still amazes me how many lives she touched, and how many more women she inspired through her own life.
