Supercritical geothermal (SCGT) energy could provide New Zealand with up to 30,000 gigawatt hours of electricity annually, equivalent to about two-thirds of the country's energy consumption! Led by Managing Director, Andreas Heuser, Castalia's analysis for GNS Science shows that it would be economically viable to build over 2000MW of capacity and even more, if power demand keeps increasing due to AI data centers and EV charging. Given policy alignment and adequate investment, SCGT could be commercialized as early as the 2030s. SCGT is an opportunity for New Zealand to reliably meet energy demands at low cost and low emissions while contributing to climate policy commitments. Last week, Dr. Isabelle Chambefort, the leader of Geothermal: The Next Generation research team, presented this critical solution in Parliament. We are pleased to announce that the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi published the Zero Emission Bus Economics Study! As part of the study, we also developed the zero-emission buses (ZEB) Cost Model to help Regional Councils assess the emissions and cost trade-offs of different bus decarbonization options. The Model is customizable and calculates the total cost of ownership (TCO) and emissions reductions or increases based on six bus technologies, ten bus use cases, three routes, and three terrain types. The cost of ownership is calculated on a per-kilometer basis. We look forward to collaborating with stakeholders to apply this innovative bus decarbonization model and sharing the study results with interested parties.
