Making Art & Asking Questions Since 2004
About us
Founded in 2004 by artists, educators, and activists, Chicago Art Department (CAD) grew out of a need to create space for artists to thrive in Chicago, fostering a spirit of community, collaboration, and inclusion for all individuals working toward civic change. Today, CAD is an artist-run, BIPOC-led nonprofit with a mission to provide space and resources for civically-minded artists to grow their practice while questioning the city we live in. CAD provides equitable and accessible opportunities for artistic development through subsidized Studio Residencies, Collective Learning Cohorts, and contemporary Exhibitions and Programs rooted in justice. For 20 years CAD has advanced creative Chicago voices that otherwise might not be heard. Collectively founded in 2004 and located in Pilsen since 2005, CAD’s physical space features 11,000 square feet comprising two public galleries, private studio space for up to 20 artists, and community event areas. Since starting the Studio Residency Program in 2012, CAD has worked with over 100 Resident artists, and through partnerships and exhibitions, has exhibited works by over 1,000 artists. CAD aims to be a collective of diverse communities tied to each Resident artist and public program, creating a rich tapestry of community and culture working toward civic change. With a mantra of TRY IT, MAKE IT, SHARE IT—CAD stands by advocacy for a more just society, and is committed to providing resources for the betterment of the city and culture we live in and call home—Chicago.

I really had to think of the format to share 16 months of reconnecting with Marquette Park, a space from my childhood—323 acres of green space I first got to know by its trees and birds before I even knew it by its name. The park is the largest green space in all of the Southwest of Chicago, a rehearsal space where friction meets freedom, where West Lawn and Chicago Lawn come to break away from the stresses of the industrial corridors. Join me on September 20th, from 4-9 PM, for the opening of diversión, the culmination of my Anchor Curatorial Residency with @chicagoparks ! Over the past year and a half, I’ve worked with the community towards this show, exploring what happens when public land is reclaimed for joy and collective experience. What happens when public engagement transforms our parks into spaces of co-creation? How can we use socially participatory projects to break out of the chronic stresses that surround us? The show invites a rhizosphere of artists and neighbors: @titewonsey @artworkprojects @eltestigo44 @wilsands @itsmedeonreed @_prince_jai Meh.work @marimachamonarcapress @criscrrross @ojitos_j8 @ariari @vales_madre @carlosbarberena @oshkur2.0 @davistint @maya.kosover @kjameshenderson @depressionpress @dudlawson @humanscaleorg @artistic_disasters and more to come! We’ll have a reception for the artists, a ceremonial dance by @xochitlquetzal.chicago , Caribbean food from @garifunaflava1 , performances by @mattriggen and Marquette’s Improv Bands, grocery giveaways from @dionschicagodream , screen printing from @saritamaritza and @selvazafiro , an open mic moderated by Ron Torres, beats by @djlokari , and so much more unfolding throughout the opening! Development opportunity for folks in Chicago: Chicago Art Department is looking for the next Collective Learning Program cohort members At CAD, we see the current media discords as an opportunity to ask deeper questions and co-learn from Chicago's passionate multidisciplinary practitioners. The Collective Learning Program brings together creative thinkers to identify, skill share, and develop collaborative strategies for more effective visual storytelling. We invite local organizers, ethnographers, and harm reduction practitioners interested in storytelling and photography in their fields to develop strategies with journalists and photographers by asking: How can we ensure that our efforts are sincere, effective, and not exploitative? What critical response does photography offer the public amid growing misinformation, tensions, and state suppression of information? What are the limitations of community-driven journalism, and how do we use photography to work beyond them? Applicants who qualify will receive an $850 honorarium for participation and culminating exhibition in Chicago in March 2024. The deadline is December 31st, 2023, at 11:59 pm (Central Time). More information in the link below I'll be facilitating this program! If you have any questions about the application, please ask here or email sebastianhidalgophoto@gmail.comttps://https://lnkd.in/gVTeYKxZ
