- “The Englewood community, where Kennedy-King College is located and where many of our students reside, has one of the highest rates of food insecurity in Chicago. Coupled with a lack of access to food, inflation and a decrease in food benefits, our students need options for support,” said Dr. Rose. Read about how City Colleges of Chicago and the Greater Chicago Food Depository are helping college students thrive through food access:
Food insecurity among college students is a national issue. A study from the Department of Education reported that 23% of undergraduates and 12% of graduate students in the U.S. experience food insecurity, affecting more than 4 million students. In addition, Dr. Allison Rose, dean of student services at Kennedy-King College, notes that undergraduate students in Chicago experience food insecurity at double the rate of all U.S. households. To address this need, the Food Depository partners with colleges across Chicago and Cook County to offer campus pantries. These pantries provide students with a variety of fresh produce, dairy items, protein and frozen foods. To learn more about our campus pantry program, visit https://bit.ly/4fQTTI6. #EndHungerNow - All City Colleges of Chicago facilities are closed today, Tuesday, January 21 due to severe weather conditions. All in-person classes scheduled for today are cancelled, and in-person student services will not be available. Online and hybrid classes will be held as scheduled. Please visit www.ccc.edu/vss to see which virtual student services are available. Students, faculty, and staff, check your email for more information--and stay safe and warm!
