ClickUp went from 0to0 to 0to200M ARR in 6 years. Here are the key tactics they used in each growth phase to compete with industry giants: 1️⃣ Opening the door: Bootstrapping ClickUp needed to be efficient with its growth. Having little money and needing to hit profitability. So they went all in on organic. - SEO. - Community. - Word of Mouth. Reaching profitability before raising any money. And at their peak growing >1000% YoY. But more importantly built an engaged and loyal customer base. All with profitable unit economics. 2️⃣ Kicking the door down: Series A to B They had found PMF. Now to scale it. They started investing in performance marketing. Going big into video ads. All quirky, unique, and fun. Expanding their audience and building a strong brand. They also started to take more risks. Highlighting the pain points of their competitors in humorous ways. B2C tactics but for B2B. Why? - No one was marketing like this in the industry. - They were putting themselves on the same level as Jira, Asana, and Monday to people viewing their ads. - Acquisition came through individuals and not enterprises. 3️⃣ A whole new world: Series B and beyond From here things got fun! To start ClickUp ramped up their performance marketing. While also building their sales team: Experimenting with product-led sales to move upmarket. But then things got physical. Investing in out-of-home marketing spend. Billboards in: - Airports - Highways - San Diego Hotspots Doing this during covid to negotiate long-term discounts. ClickUp started popping up everywhere in SD. Even sponsoring the Padres. Creating curiosity and larger brand awareness.
