I had the incredible opportunity to participate in a panel at the Fast Company Innovation Festival, where we discussed the future of food safety, sustainability, and traceability. The conversation explored the FDA’s upcoming traceability guidelines and the game-changing potential of technologies like 2D barcodes (QR codes). It’s clear that as we move toward 2026, the food industry is facing both challenges and opportunities. While these new regulations aim to increase transparency, they also provide an opportunity for companies to embrace sustainability and improve the traceability of their products - from seafood to fresh produce. During the panel, we emphasized the need for collaboration across industries to define universal data standards that will not only ensure food safety but also reduce waste and enhance sustainability practices. One key takeaway from our discussion was how 2D barcodes can offer consumers vital real-time information about their food - whether it’s freshness or sustainability. By creating greater transparency, we can reduce food waste, increase accountability across the supply chain, and elevate the narrative around sustainable practices in the food industry. It was a privilege to share the stage with industry leaders like Carrie Wilkie from GS1 US and Tamara Muretagoiena from the International Fresh Produce Association, and I’m excited to see how these innovations will shape the future of food. https://lnkd.in/ekdiydck #FoodSafety #Sustainability #Traceability #Innovation #SupplyChain #Seafood #FreshProduce #FastCompany #GS1 #FSMA204 #Seafood🎣 #Sushi 🍣 #SuperFrozen #UltraLowTemperature #ULT Carrie Wilkie Tamara Muruetagoiena GS1 US Culinary Collaborations LLC Fast Company International Fresh Produce Association

This year, the GTA had a prominent presence at the Tokyo Sustainable Seafood Summit! Two of our members took the stage to discuss sustainable practices and transparency in the tuna industry, highlighting the GTA’s ongoing commitment to responsible fisheries. Usufukuhonten highlighted the need for improved traceability in the Japanese supply chain to deter IUU from entering the market, while Culinary Collaborations worked hard to ensure the Japanese market understand that, in unity, good actors in the supply chain have strength to make positive change. The event covered vital topics such as supply chain transparency, reducing overfishing, and promoting human rights due diligence. Our participation reflects the growing recognition of GTA’s efforts in the Japanese market, marking a step forward in regional collaboration. Thank you to all who participated to make it such an enriching day Culinary Collaborations LLC - Culinary Collaborations LLC reposted this

Thank you to Seafood Legacy and 公益財団法人 世界自然保護基金ジャパン(WWF Japan)for hosting the 2024 #Responsible #Tuna #Sourcing #Symposium last week in #Tokyo, #Japan. I was honoured to represent The Nature Conservancy, participating on a panel discussing The Challenges and Possibilities of Electronic Monitoring (EM) in the Tuna Supply Chain, together with Usui Sotaro of Usufuko Honten, Gunther Errhalt of Global Tuna Alliance, Renee Perry, of Culinary Collaborations LLC, and moderated by Yukiko Kuwata of Seafood Legacy. The Symposium focused on: 1. The Current State of Sustainable Tuna Products and MSC certification 2. Issues of Human Rights Violations and Forced Labor 3. Challenges and Possibilities of Electronic Monitoring (EM) in the Tuna Supply Chain (as part of traceability) Japan is a key tuna producing and consuming nation, and tuna is an integral part of the rich Japanese #food #culture, #livelihood, and #heritage. Tuna #Traceability is key for sustainability, however, the best traceability #tools and #systems cannot provide confidence that tuna have been harvested #legally, #sustainably, and without #labor #abuses, without the #visibility provided by robust at-sea #monitoring. The Nature Conservancy's large scale fisheries program engages with industrial fisheries globally as ~2% of the #global #fishing #fleet accounts for more than 50% of the world's catch. As the vast majority of #illegal and #unsustainable fishing is undertaken by legally licensed- but #unmonitored- fishing vessels through prohibited activities at sea. So, the need is to focus on #transparency at the vessel level building momentum for on-the-water monitoring of all industrial tuna vessels through electronic monitoring (EM) #technology and/or human observers. The Tuna Transparency Pledge is a global initiative led by TNC to unite businesses and governments to do just that for all industrial tuna fisheries by 2027. Join them and let's get #EyesOnTuna with 100% on-the-water monitoring as the new #industry #standard for #business #sustainability. Looking forward to further developing and elevating #collaborative #partnerships with key stakeholders in business, government and NGO's in Japan on the road to the Tokyo Sustainable Seafood Symposium in October- #TSSS2024 #sustainable #responsible #seafoodArigato gozaimashita! - Culinary Collaborations LLC reposted this
