- Awo spent her first 22 years managing sickle cell disease, a lifelong genetic disease that affects the red blood cells. That meant dealing with pain crises, hospital visits and challenges that impacted her schoolwork, social life and mental health. Sickle cell crises can ebb and flow. Growing up, Awo took many daily medications to manage her disease, with occasional severe symptoms that led hospital stays at Dayton Children’s. One of the more common reasons for Awo’s hospital admissions was acute chest syndrome - a sickle cell attack in the chest that causes pneumonia-like symptoms. She would get breathing treatments and medicine to manage her pain. As she got older and entered college, these attacks and hospital visits became less frequent but harder to recover from, impacting her schoolwork. As Awo’s attacks started to become more severe, she and her family started to look for new treatment options with Dr. Dole, her lifetime hematology/oncology doctor at Dayton Children’s! Now, Awo is cured of sickle cell disease! ❤️🎉 Awo and her family decided on a bone marrow transplant in 2023 through the cellular therapy program - a partnership between Dayton Children's and Nationwide Children's Hospital. This one program, two campus approach allows Dayton-area families to stay close to home for most of their care, while receiving expert transplant care from Nationwide Children’s! Nurse coordinators and providers on both teams support families every step of the way. The journey wasn’t easy, but with great support from her family and care teams, Awo is now looking forward to the future - and this fall, she be began law school! Fun moments, like pretend sword fights or Mario Kart tournaments during difficult treatments, mean the world to us,” Dr. Wright shared. 3 things to know about hematology and oncology at Dayton Children’s: 1️⃣ As part of the Children's Oncology Group, a multi-center alliance with other leading pediatric cancer institutions, children receive access to the same best protocols at Dayton Children's that they would at other member hospitals. 2️⃣ We’re the only facility in the area providing comprehensive care for infants, children, and teens with sickle cell disease as part of the West Central Ohio Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center. 3️⃣ Pediatric research is a passion. We’re working to improve the lives of kids with cancer, sickle cell anemia, and hemophilia. A child’s health shouldn’t depend on their zip code, family income, or access to basic needs. Yet, research shows that 80% of a child’s health is determined by factors outside of medical care. These barriers keep children from achieving optimal health today and lead to lifelong chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and uncontrolled asthma. Together, we can help children live healthier, fuller lives today and into the future. Learn more and join us by making a donation to help remove barriers as part of the Do. More. so all kids thrive campaign. https://lnkd.in/e_J2B2PD

get vaccinated with Dayton Children's childrensdayton.org - Did you know that Dayton Children’s has a sensory program for children who need a surgery or procedure? What started as a program specifically for children with autism spectrum disorder, has expanded to assisting all children who have special needs and higher anxieties around coming to the hospital for a surgical procedure. Since the start of our sensory program in 2017, the experience has helped reduce the amount of pre-surgery calming medicine from 90% to 20% of patients. This program is just one way we are advancing care at Dayton Children's. Help us do more so all kids thrive by making a donation today to our Do. Learn more about Dr. Shank below and schedule an appointment online today by visiting: https://bit.ly/4dii018What does Dr. Shank treat? 🩺 all conditions related your child’s bones, including fractures, knee and ankle injuries and more. Where did Dr. Shank train? 🎓 Residency in orthopedics Mount Carmel Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio 🏥 Fellowship in pediatric orthopedic surgery at Seattle Children's Hospital, Seattle, WA Why does Dr. Shank love working with kids? 💙 “I love working with kids because of their positive outlook on life, their ability to heal, and their excitement to get back to having fun!” Why does Dr. Shank want families to know its important to see a pediatric orthopedic doctor when their child needs care? ❤️ Not only do growing kids have different bone and joint anatomy, but it constantly changes with age. A pediatric specialist has more experience interpreting normal and abnormal x-rays for kids and a pediatric orthopedic surgeon knows which injuries are most common for different ages and is specially trained to manage them in growing kids - with or without surgery #DaytonChildrens #WeAreDaytonChildrens #AboveandBeyond4Kids #MeetTheDoc #MeetADoc #pediatricorthopedics #orthopedics #fracture #kneeinjury #ankleinjury #fracturecare
