- Advancing a more accessible Kosovo! The "Expansion of Signs in Germia Park" project in Pristina, implemented by DI and co-funded by USAID Social Contract Activity and the Directorate of Public Spaces and Parks, brought together local officials and citizens, and the Social Contract Activity team to improve accessibility and promote environmental awareness in Germia Park. This collaborative effort expanded trail networks, reduced car reliance, and introduced informative kiosks and thematic maps, enriching the park experience for visitors. The project demonstrated the power of community input and a shared vision for sustainable urban development. 🌍🌿#GermiaPark #SustainableUrbanDevelopment #SocialContractActivity #EmpoweredCommunities

From November 22–24, 2024, the USAID-funded Ain Shohayota Activity, implemented by Democracy International in partnership with the National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO), organized a workshop titled “Serving Vulnerable Legal Aid Seekers to Enhance Access to Justice” at Dream Square Resort, Gazipur. The workshop, attended by 30 District Legal Aid Officers (DLAOs), focused on enhancing the capacity of government legal aid services to support marginalized groups, contributing to a more just, peaceful and prosperous Bangladesh. Key Highlights: • Chief Guest: Mr. Sheikh Abu Taher, Secretary, Law and Justice Division, emphasized the government’s commitment to improving legal aid services and sought input from participants. • Special Guest: Dr. Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan, Registrar General, Suprme Court Bangladesh, urged DLAOs to reach rural and underserved populations, including those in prisons. • Ms. Alena Tansey, USAID, highlighted public trust in legal aid services and USAID’s dedication to promoting access to justice. • Ms. Heather Goldsmith, Chief of Party, Ain Shohayota Activity, stressed the transformative impact of legal aid for over a million Bangladeshis. • Mr. Mohammad Al Mamun, NLASO Director, encouraged mediation as a cost-effective, timely resolution method. In 2024, we launched the USAID-funded Responsive Local Governance (RLG) Activity in Bangladesh. This initiative is designed to strengthen accountability and improve service delivery in critical areas like education, healthcare, and economic development. By fostering transparency and effective local governance, we aim to support Bangladesh in empowering communities and elevating citizen voices in decision-making processes. As part of our work, RLG's team recently engaged with the Local Government Reform Commission (LGRC) to foster strategic collaboration for sustainable development, aligning the goals of both RLG and LGRC. Together, we're working to create a future where effective, transparent, and accountable governance drives progress in Bangladesh. 🔗 Read more about the program here: https://buff.ly/4gIYspo #ResponsiveGovernance #LocalGovernance #Transparency #Accountability #CommunityEmpowerment #Bangladesh - Fighting corruption strengthens democracy, fostering justice, accountability, and trust in governance. In Ghana, DI’s USAID-supported Performance Accountability Activity is empowering civil society organizations (CSOs) to combat corruption in local public services, with inspiring results. The activity brought together CSOs, local authorities, and government agencies like the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice and the Economic and Organized Crime Office, equipping them with practical tools to identify and address corruption. Participating CSOs are now using these resources to advocate against corruption through community forums, social media, and community radio. The message is clear: communities are demanding accountability, and a culture of transparency is growing, driven by collaboration and a shared commitment to a corruption-free future in Ghana.#AntiCorruption #Accountability #Transparency #Development #PublicService #CivilSociety #Ghana
- In Rečane, Kosovo, children played on a ruined sports field from the 1970s, which was the only public recreational space in the community. Despite repeated requests, local school principal Ms. Rajma Sagdati couldn’t get the field renovated until she heard about the USAID Social Contract Activity, which is implemented by DI. The activity aims to empower citizens to select community projects and build trust in local government through participatory budgeting. Ms. Sagdati rallied her community and presented a proposal to restore the field to the mayor in a meeting at her school. With strong support from the residents, the project went to a vote and won. The result was a fully renovated recreational space for the community. For Rečane, the new field is more than just a playground; it symbolizes community empowerment. This success is part of a larger trend in Kosovo, where citizen participation in budgeting has nearly doubled. DI’s role in the Social Contract Activity has helped communities like Rečane shape Kosovo’s future from the ground up. Direct Democracy in Kosovo’s Sharri Mountains | News | Kosovo | U.S. Agency for International Development usaid.gov - 🌐 Increasing women’s participation in leadership and decision-making roles is essential to building inclusive governance and equitable representation. Challenging long-standing social norms and reshaping habitual behaviors are critical first steps toward this goal. Through our USAID-supported Elections and Democracy Activity, we created "Ready to Ascend"—a book comprised of an inspiring collection of profiles featuring Liberian women who are breaking barriers in a traditionally male-dominated political landscape and are poised to take on leadership roles paving the way to greater participation in decision-making process and political representation. "Ready to Ascend" highlights their journeys, the challenges they’ve overcome, and the meaningful contributions they’re making to Liberia’s political sphere. Ready to Ascend underscores the transformative power of women’s leadership in driving change and creating a safer, more equitable future for all. Join us in celebrating their courage, vision, and unwavering drive for progress. Explore the Ready to Ascend book here: https://buff.ly/3P4YcVv #WomenInLeadership #ReadyToAscend #Liberia
