There’s a secret weapon helping dealerships sell cars out-of-state: I recently spoke with David Donaldson, Senior Vice President at DLRdmv about how digital tech is changing the registration/titling game and making cross-country sales easier for dealers big and small. 1. Problems with titling. – In most states, the DMV controls the title and registration process. – DMVs are focused on regulatory compliance, not making the customer happy. – This can result in long wait times and unhappy buyers. 2. Dealing with banks is stressful. – Banks also put immense pressure on dealers to get titling done as fast as possible. – If the purchased vehicle is an accident before the lien gets recorded, the bank may be unable to recover its money from the customer. – In some cases, dealers may even be forced to buy back the loan. 3. Why out-of-state titles are an issue. – The COVID pandemic led lots of consumers to buy out of state. Even today, many buyers are crossing state lines to purchase cars. – Registering cars for out-of-state buyers can be challenging for dealers. – Each state has different taxes, regulations and forms — making mistakes can be costly. 4. Tech is changing the titling game. – Tech is making dealers' lives easier by speeding up the titling process and removing barriers for out-of-state buyers. – E-titling tools let dealers generate registrations for any state on demand. DMS integrations make the process incredibly convenient. – Meanwhile, e-signature tools let customers complete important documents on their phones. This is crucial for special situations, such as when military spouses are deployed overseas. 5. Benefits of e-titling. – Digital titles offer more accuracy than other methods, saving dealerships money. – For dealers who do a large number of out-of-state sales, small errors can quickly add up to thousands of dollars in lost revenue. – Faster titling saves time for customers and employees, boosting CSI and efficiency. It also makes it easier for banks and dealers to communicate and move quickly. The full episode is live!
