- Account Executive Courtney Bird serves on the National Guard and is one of more than 2,300 veterans at Duke Energy. Bird recently supported relief efforts in western North Carolina as a head liaison officer. In his role, he ensured emergency operations centers across impacted counties received National Guard support. "[On] Oct. 5, the North Carolina National Guard asked if I could assist with western North Carolina's recovery efforts," said Bird. "Within 18 hours, I was in Hickory, N.C., where FEMA had established a hub for recovery efforts." Bird serves as the 505th Engineer Battalion Commander with the National Guard, leading more than 500 soldiers. He says 70 percent of his battalion was called to western North Carolina. "Serving as the Battalion Commander has been the highlight of my military career." Bird spent six years in active duty with the 82nd Airborne Division, including two deployments to Afghanistan. He's served the last 10 years with the National Guard. "On Veterans Day, we are honor the countless sacrifices that these brave men and women have made and continue to make to protect this great nation," said Bird. "These men and women make up such a tremendous part of our community and have a profound impact on our everyday life." "For that, I will be forever grateful."#veteran #veteransday

"At the end of the day, all that we're really concerned about is serving our customers." In celebration of Power Plant Worker Appreciation Day, meet Electrical Engineer Emily Jones. She is one of our 7,500+ power plant employees who work across six states to maintain and operate more than 115 of our power plants, stations, and facilities, including coal, #solar, natural gas, #hydro, and #nuclear. They account for about a quarter of all our employees, and their work is the heart of reliable generation of more than 54,000 megawatts of #energy. Read Emily’s full story: http://spr.ly/6044Sz92m. - NEW: As demand for electricity continues to grow, the EPRI has launched its DCFlex Initiative, a multi-year R&D program to explore how data centers can support and better interconnect with the electric grid. http://spr.ly/6045SK961. The initiative will deploy five to ten large-scale flexibility hubs to serve as living laboratories to explore strategies for integrating data centers with the grid. They will also experiment with innovative solutions—like artificial intelligence, biodiesel, hydrogen, advanced energy storage systems, and others—setting the stage for potential grid-connected operations in the future. We are excited to join this initiative alongside several other tech and utility companies. DCFlex will help identify new data center designs to help grid-connected consumers, support utility flexibility, affordability, and create operational frameworks for faster grid interconnection. #DataCenters #EnergyEfficiency #Sustainability #Innovation #AI
- In western North Carolina, hundreds of crews remain on the ground working to restore power in areas hardest hit by Hurricane Helene. From several miles away, Duke Energy employees throughout the Carolinas are rolling up their sleeves to provide relief in other ways. In Raleigh, more than 200 Duke Energy employees joined the Rally for Relief event, packing 1,000 first aid kits, 50,000 diapers, and 10,000 feminine and family hygiene items into emergency supply kits. In Charlotte, employees packed 10,000 emergency food boxes for delivery to the most impacted areas. A week later, they shut down an uptown block for the Harvest Hustle, sorting and bundling over 40,000 lbs. of apples. In Upstate South Carolina, employees answered phones at an all-day telethon helping raise nearly $200,000 for relief. As families in the North Carolina mountain region continue to rebuild, we continue to look for ways to offer a bit of comfort while we work restore power to all impacted communities. Thank you to our partners who help make these efforts possible: American Red Cross North Carolina, American Red Cross of South Carolina, Charlotte Center City Partners, DIAPER BANK OF NORTH CAROLINA, Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, MANNA FoodBank - Asheville NC, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, The No Woman, No Girl Initiative, United Way of the Greater Triangle, WYFF 4
- As we continue to restore power to the western North Carolina communities hit the hardest by #Helene, partnerships with county, state and federal agencies have been essential - and have helped us make progress faster than expected. Recently, for example, work by NCDOT to rebuild roads and bridges gave our crews access to Cane Creek Road in Bakersville, N.C., so we can continue what has been a challenging and lengthy restoration effort for the community. Power grid infrastructure had to be rebuilt all the way from the substation in Spruce Pine, N.C., including over mountains. Our engineering technologist Scott Tippett and NCDOT engineer Travis Henley discuss the project.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, I want to take a moment to reflect on the immense challenges faced by the Florida communities. The destruction caused by this storm so shortly after Helene has been profound, and my thoughts go out to everyone affected. I am incredibly proud of our team, whose unwavering commitment and resilience have been on full display. We restored many Florida customers on Sunday night and are on track to restore those in the hardest-hit areas by this evening. Thank you to everyone involved in this critical work. Your efforts make a difference every day and will ensure that we are ready for whatever lies ahead.
