If you would have told high school “me” that one day I’d be leading a team and spending most of my day interacting with people, I would’ve laughed (or more likely, nervously nodded and avoided eye contact!). Back then, I was the quiet one, rarely saying a word unless it was to a close friend. Fast forward to today, I spend most of my time leading meetings, engaging with people, and connecting with colleagues across all levels. Am I now magically a “social butterfly”? Absolutely not. I’m still seen as “quiet” in certain situations. But what once felt debilitating is now far less daunting. This past week, my team hosted a series of Halloween events to bring some fun into our day. As I took a moment to take it all in from my office, I saw my team laughing, connecting, and thoroughly enjoying themselves—it was incredible. I couldn’t imagine spending my day any other way. In a surprising twist, my colleague, Scott Pitts, even convinced me to dress up for the company Halloween costume contest! For anyone who knows me, this was WAY beyond my comfort zone. Never in a million years would I have pictured myself doing that! I am grateful to work with Scott and so many others who push me daily to step outside of my comfort zone and strive to become my “best self”. So, what changed? • Embracing Uncomfortable Situations: Learning to push beyond what feels comfortable has been a game-changer. For me, this is best achieved in the workplace as I do not have the option otherwise. • Working for a Company That Believes in Me: The support and trust of my workplace and leaders have empowered me to grow each day. • A Team That Has My Back: I am beyond fortunate to work with people who encourage me to stretch beyond my limits to be a better leader and colleague. To anyone struggling with social anxiety: don’t give up. Growth is possible. If I can go from saying five words a day in high school to leading a team with pride and purpose, you can overcome your own challenges too. Small steps lead to big changes. One day, you may find yourself doing things you never thought possible. I certainly have. We’ve got this! #SocialAnxiety #GrowthJourney #Leadership #Teamwork #KeepGoing
