- ✨Grant Announcement✨ The Centering Equity in the Sustainable Building Sector (CESBS) Initiative announced three awards from its first-ever funding process to support grassroots, community-based projects embodying the mission and vision of the initiative. Today, we highlight Reno-Sparks NAACP, the recipient of a $25,000 grant from the CESBS Initiative to launch the Environmental In Home Protection Educational Program (EIHPEP), an outreach and education program focused on healthy and sustainable buildings in Washoe County, Nevada. . . ℹ️ Background and Impact The Reno-Sparks NAACP has identified numerous issues related to healthy and sustainable buildings in underserved communities in which they have a presence. Focus areas of the education program will include: ✨ Awareness of the environmental and climate justice implications related to the building sector. ✨ Policy opportunities to ensure new construction is sustainable, for example, by eliminating gas, encouraging renewable energy, aligning with the expansion of electric vehicles, and setting other comprehensive green building standards. ✨ Policy and program opportunities to retrofit homes and ensure a safe & just transition for old buildings. Reno-Sparks NAACP will partner with academic and other organizations to connect community members with free and reduced-cost products and services. For example, the branch has already partnered to distribute free testing kits and monitors. Guided by President Patricia Gallimore, this project will include capacity-building to grow a team of committed advocates and peer educators, starting with the branch’s 10-person Environmental & Climate Justice Committee. The CESBS Initiative and Emerald Cities Collaborative commend Reno-Sparks NAACP for their commitment to centering equity in the sustainable building sector! - ✨Grant Announcement✨ The Centering Equity in the Sustainable Building Sector (CESBS) Initiative announced three awards from its first-ever funding process to support grassroots, community-based projects embodying the mission and vision of the initiative. Today, we highlight REDEEM and Kennesaw State University (KSU), the recipients of a $100,000 grant to collaborate, design, and build a sustainable outdoor training and social kitchen in Atlanta’s West End neighborhood. The kitchen will accommodate REDEEM’s growing workforce program for black women experiencing homelessness and community education programs. . . ℹ️ Background and Impact The West End neighborhood is majority Black and low-income, characterized as a food desert and confronting gentrification. Under the leadership of Sister DeBorah Williams, REDEEM currently operates two houses, multiple community gardens and an orchard, and a farmers market, all of which support hands-on training for community members about how to grow, harvest, cook, preserve, market, and sell food. REDEEM is supported by a team from KSU’s College of Architecture and Construction Management with leadership by Dr. Hashas-Degertekin, through which the design and construction documents will be prepared and the construction process will be managed. The kitchen will be designed with sustainable materials, hardware, and energy systems for minimum energy bills. Solar panels and water harvesting systems will help it to function off the grid as much as possible. In addition, the kitchen will feature a distinct visual quality - as much as the historic district rules in the neighborhood allow - to make the space a visual beacon and source of community pride.
