- A pregnant person’s risk for complications doesn’t end with delivery—1 in 7 people develop a high blood pressure disorder during or after pregnancy, putting them at risk for stroke or organ damage. M Health Fairview keeps an eye on postpartum patients with elevated blood pressure after they’ve left the hospital with a six-week home-monitoring program through MyChart. Patients record their blood pressure twice a day, and a team of nurses monitors that data and intervenes when necessary. One year in, the program has served 367 patients and has led to a 69% reduction in postpartum readmissions due to hypertension. Here’s to keeping more parents healthy and at home with their babies. - The first three years of development have a lifelong effect on a child’s physical, social, and emotional well-being. That’s why it’s important to monitor children for developmental delays and intervene early. NYC Health + Hospitals, in partnership with the NYC Health Department’s Bureau of Early Intervention, has worked to increase detection of delays for all children by integrating routine developmental screenings into pediatric visits in Epic. Through this and a simplified referral process for clinicians, they’ve increased early intervention referrals by 30%. This means children received services starting at 18-23 months on average, compared with the New York City average of 24-29 months. Nice work, folks! - Thousands of Veterans have learned they’re eligible for healthcare, food, and housing benefits through enhanced interoperability between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and our customer community. Here, Tufts Medicine and Sanford Health join Anthony Corso and Nick Frenzer—both Veterans and Epic staff—to share the why and how. “I’ve seen firsthand how critical access to care can be, having lost friends who struggled to find support after returning home from deployment,” said Anthony Corso, a combat Veteran and leader of Epic’s interoperability efforts with the VA. “Veterans have earned excellent hands-on care from their communities, and this is one way to help ensure that they receive it.” Here’s to helping those who have given so much—today and every day. - There’s no place like home—and the research agrees. Patients in hospital at home programs experience fewer complications and better recoveries than they would during long hospital stays.Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, and Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust established virtual wards to allow patients to receive hospital-level care from the comfort of home. Nurses monitor patients’ vitals using in-home devices, and they can offer in-person check-ins when patients need a hand with treatment. Across the three organizations, 94%-97% of patients reported high satisfaction with the programs. By the way—hospital at home programs are good for hospital capacity, too. Cambridge University Hospitals treated 1,800 patients at home in just one year, freeing up more than 4,000 hospital bed hours for higher acuity patients. Congrats, everyone! - After a three-year hiatus, our traditional New York deli, Mikey’s, has reopened on campus. They’re serving up classics like reubens with a side of slaw or potato salad, bagels with schmear, and matzo ball soup. Oh, and don’t forget the black and white cookies. Welcome back, Mikey! #healthcare #healthIT #workplace
- Surgeons at Amsterdam UMC recently became the first in the world to test predictive modeling’s ability to help prevent complications during surgery. The model, which has been trained on data from 5,000 operations and has tested with 97% accuracy so far, is designed to predict which colon cancer patients are most at risk of complications—specifically “seam leaks,” which are common during bowel surgery. The model adjusts its predictions in real time based on data in Epic, including changes in the patient’s blood pressure or blood loss during surgery, and gives surgeons information to help them decide which surgical options might have a better outcomes. While the model is still in a pilot phase with more testing and validation needed, the team is enthusiastic about its potential to support surgical decision-making and believes it will be another useful tool in a surgeon’s tool belt. AI model gives first-ever predictive advice during surgery advalvas.vu.nl - What do you do when a swarm of (presumably nerdy) bees decides to call your office home? Our answer: search the employee interest pages for someone who moonlights as a beekeeper. Enter Patrick, a business intelligence developer here at Epic, pictured below. Several bee jackets, one aerial lift, and a bee vacuum later, our buzzy buddies were on their way to their new home at the Farley Center—a local nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting ecological sustainability. “I’m very grateful to be a part of a place that puts in the effort to be mindful of our environment,” Patrick said. “This was not a small undertaking. It involved dozens of folks from facilities taking time to train me on the lift, get the equipment in place, and get the area blocked off for safety. We frequently take the harder path with our software if it’s the right thing to do for our customers and their patients. We share that philosophy across all of Epic.” Thanks to Patrick, Matt Kersten (Epic EDI), Tara Caso (Epic Horticulture), and everyone else who chipped in #healthIT #sustainability
- Too often, veterans don’t receive the healthcare benefits to which they’re entitled—and it’s often due to a simple lack of awareness. They might not know what help’s available—from health insurance to community resources for housing, food, and treatment of PTSD—and they might not identify as veterans when they receive care at their local health system. The Department of Veterans Affairs asked us to help them close the knowledge gap. Now, health systems can use Epic to connect with the VA and promote awareness of the healthcare benefits that veterans have earned. Tufts Medicine and Sanford Health were the first to go live with the connection back in January and May of this year, respectively. Since then, Tufts has confirmed over 2,500 veterans with at least one condition that allows them to receive additional healthcare benefits under the new Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT) Act—a law that expands VA health care and benefits for veterans exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxic substances. Sanford has educated nearly 6,000 veterans about their PACT Act benefits and issued nearly 500 social care referrals. Congratulations, folks #healthIT #veterans
- By using a predictive model to identify early signs of patient deterioration, RWJBarnabas Health has seen a 15% decrease in mortality among patients in the hospital—about 100 lives saved since March of this year. Epic’s Deterioration Index looks beyond a patient’s current physiological state and examines data across their entire record—vital signs, medical history, demographics, lab results, and more. By looking at the patient as a whole, the model can flag patients who might not be showing obvious health problems, like those with low blood pressure or a fast heart rate, so that rapid response teams can intervene quickly. "It's like the machine is rounding on you constantly,” said Andy Anderson, MD, EVP and chief medical and quality officer at RWJBarnabas. “We've been able to identify patients, intervene early, and save lives. We've seen some really significant results and patients who might otherwise have died because we were able to detect them earlier." Congratulations, folks! Read more: https://lnkd.in/g6AVy8fg
- Infusion appointments are complex. They’re often several hours long, they require the coordination of several clinicians and resources, and they come at an especially complicated time in patients’ lives. With so many factors in the mix, it’s easy for infusion chairs to go unused and for patients to spend unnecessary time waiting for care. By automating and fine-tuning infusion schedules based on factors like historical demand, staffing patterns, and clinic resources, our friends at PeaceHealth, Asante, and University of Iowa Health Care saw patient volume increase up to 20%, patient wait times reduced by up to 41%, and gross income increase up to 15%. Better for patients, better for providers. Great work, everyone! Read more: https://lnkd.in/gHmFDMEr
