I am happy to share that the Japan Association for Cellular Agriculture (JACA) 細胞農業研究機構's comprehensive report on International Trends in the Safety and Regulatory Assessment of Cultivated Food is now available! https://lnkd.in/gi7QQ9geI would like to express my sincere gratitude for the support from startups that contributed to sharing insights into their safety information and measures for cultivated food, as well as Jo Anne Shatkin and Kimberly Ong from Vireo Advisors, LLC, our knowledgeable partner to combine a variety of information into a consistent safety policy. As the next step, we are preparing an Opinion Paper interpreting the global safety trend of cultivated food, "International Trends in the Safety and Regulatory Assessment of Cultivated Food," under Japanese regulations. I hope our activity can be a successful case study to harmonize and/or optimize the global trend on safety discussions for cultivated food under a certain country's regulations and practices. Food Safety experts from around the world! Comments for improvements are welcomed! We are looking for academic panels to yearly update our report "International Trends in the Safety and Regulatory Assessment of Cultivated Food" as well as the Opinion Paper that JACA is currently working on. - 🔍 Today we are presenting FEASTS partner EHU – University of the Basque Country. The collaborative and trans-disciplinary team of 15 members from Spanish and US universities has experience in competitive call projects and publications that address ethical-legal and governance issues raised in the EU by disruptive innovations in fields including agro- and bio-technologies. 🌱 In FEASTS, EHU will be working on topics related to ethics, food justice and animal welfare, as well as leading the work package involving 11 FEATS partners, devoted to #foodsafety, nutrition and regulatory assessment. An international workshop on the Ethical and Regulatory issues arising from the CM/CSF will be organised in Bilbao in the autumn of 2025. 📜 In terms of food governance, EU pre-market authorization means access to the market in all 27 Member States. EHU is responsible for tasks devoted to positioning #culturedmeat and seafood within the current requirements and procedures of EU food law. Guidelines will be proposed for the future establishment of a framework taking into account the specifications of cultured meat. Another task led by EHU will identify labeling needs and related traceability requirements, addressing aspects of mandatory labeling and voluntary claims which refer to health, sustainability, animal welfare, etc. 🎓 The EHU FEASTS team is led by Leire Escajedo San-Epifanio (Prof. Law and Ethics, second PhD in Biotechnology) and Ester Suñén Pardo (Prof. Food Technologies). Fantastic to be working together #CellularAgriculture #BioTech #HorizonEU #EUProject #research #OpenScience
- 💥 🎉 FEASTS partner GOURMEY has become the first company to to file a dossier for the approval of a cell-based meat product in the #EU. The submission was also filed with the US FDA, Singapore Food Agency, UK Food Standards Agency, Swiss Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office FSVO, and the European Commission. Congratulations to the whole Gourmey team! 📃 The application for cultured foie gras will undergo stringent authorization procedures, lasting minimum 18 months and ensuring compliance with the highest food safety standards in the world. As part of the assessment under the EU Novel Food Regulation, the potential social, economic and environmental impact will also be taken into account. These impacts are currently the topic of FEASTS research which is employing a food-systems thinking approach to help understand the role cultured meat and seafood might play in a resilient, equitable and sustainable #foodsystem.#cultivatedmeat #cellularagriculture #EUproject #HorizonEurope

Pivotal milestone for GOURMEY and the cultivated foods ecosystem. We’re thrilled to announce that over the past few months, GOURMEY has requested market approval in five regions, filing applications with the US FDA, Singapore Food Agency, UK Food Standards Agency, Swiss Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office FSVO, and the European Commission. This achievement makes us the very first cultivated food company to file for approval in the EU. Complying with the rigorous standards of these world’s most advanced agencies on cultivated foods regulation, including the EU’s stringent novel food framework, is a testament to GOURMEY’s technology leadership, our commitment to safety, and the immense dedication of our team. We want to celebrate a massive team effort from all Gourmates, involving relentless work over the past few years to build a safe, resource-efficient, and commercially viable solution. We’ll first empower our culinary partners with our flagship cultivated duck product, offering a new choice for foie gras enthusiasts, chefs, and restaurants worldwide, followed by further sustainable and delicious foods as we continue to scale up. As Europe aims to boost food security and achieve sustainability goals, we are convinced that cultivated foods have strong potential to complement existing agrifood value chains, enhancing the long-term resilience of our food system. We look forward to continuing our close collaboration with regulatory authorities to introduce our products to the market. Special mention to the leadership of our Regulatory & Food Safety team: Hannah Lester, Brian Chun, Nadine Bongaerts-Duportet, Ph.D., and Victor SAYOUS. We are deeply thankful for all our partners, advisors, investors, and supporters. Thank you for being part of our journey—much more to come! Horizon4Proteins (H4P) brings together EU-funded projects dedicated to research on sustainable, resilient, and equitable food systems, with a focus on diversified protein sources. The collaboration addresses consumer acceptance, safety and regulatory challenges, food applications, sustainability and ethical considerations. 📅 Established in 2021, H4P initially included four EU-funded projects: NextGenProteins, ProFuture Project, Smart Protein Project and SUSINCHAIN. New projects focusing on diversified sources of proteins have joined the collaboration as the original four projects have reached their end dates. As of July 2024, the Horizon4Protein collaboration consists of GIANT LEAPS project, LIKE-A-PRO, VALPRO Path, INNOAQUA Project and FEASTS. 💡 Horizon4Proteins leverages the expertise of diverse stakeholders to maximize opportunities and address challenges associated with alternative proteins. The cluster fosters innovation, idea exchange, and co-creation of guidelines and solutions to advance the sustainability and resilience of EU food systems. 🌟 FEASTS’ involvement will ensure the continuity of the Horizon4Proteins platform and support the EU's transition towards a more sustainable and resilient food system.#Sustainability #FoodSecurity #AlternativeProteins #Innovation #EUProjects
