- Day of the Dead, or Día de Muertos, is celebrated every November 1-2 in Mexico. 💙 Families invite loved ones who have passed on back to the world of the living with ofrendas decorated with photos of relatives, favorite foods, and marigolds or “cempasúchitl.” 🕯 In October, the Field Museum’s Keller Science Action Center, the University of Illinois Chicago's Plant Research Greenhouse, and Tiahui Xicago harvested a crop of 1,000 marigolds for a Dia de Muertos celebrations, including a lakefront gathering at the Burnham Wildlife Corridor with more of the Museum’s Roots & Routes Initiative community partners: 💙 Artist Hector Duarte 💙 Artist Alfonso “Piloto” Nieves 💙 Casa Michoacán 💙 Mujeres por Espacios Verdes 💙 Rincon Family Services 💙 The Nature Conservancy in Illinois 💙 Chicago Park District 📸 (1, 2, 4): Kyle Flubacker
- Mummied individuals, unwrapped Last month, Field researchers CT scanned 26 Egyptian mummified individuals to learn more about the people inside who lived as many as 3,000 years ago. While we’re just beginning to review the complex images from this process, we’ve already gained important insights into 2 of the individuals scanned: 🔍 Lady Chenet-aa: 👀 In her late 30s or early 40s at the time of her death 👀 Missing or worn down teeth indicate the food she ate had grains of sand 👀 Supplementary eyes placed over her eye sockets for her use in the afterlife 🔍 Harwa, Doorkeeper of the 22nd Kingdom’s granary (a relatively cushy job) 👀 In his early to mid-40s at the time of death 👀 The condition of his spine doesn’t indicate ailments from repeated physical activity 👀 Well-kept teeth indicate access to high-quality foods Learn more about mummified individuals at the Museum. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eDP4m7XC

- “Everything old is new again.” 🦴✨ Last week, we introduced the Chicago Archaeopteryx to its permanent home—right around the corner from SUE. 💙 While this fossil is relatively small compared to our 9-ton T. rex, it and its new multimedia roost tell a BIG story about the evolution of modern birds from dinosaurs. 🦖 🦅 See more via WTTW/Chicago PBS. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/g3FekyHq
- A little birdie said something BIG is happening at the Field this Friday. 👀 Peek behind the scenes as Exhibitions Preparator Janice Lim painted, prepped, and posted models for the permanent home of the Chicago Archaeopteryx—opening this Friday, September 27! 🎉 These Jurassic birds may be bite-sized compared to SUE, but they tell a massively important story: the evolution of dinosaurs to today's modern birds. 🦖 🦅 Learn more. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gkzTntBm

- On this day 131 years ago, we received our charter from the State of Illinois. 💙 Take a look back at this photo from our opening day in 1894, when we still called Jackson Park home (you may recognize the building today as that of our friends at Griffin Museum of Science and Industry)! 🏛 Recognize any familiar specimens still on display today in these photos? 👀
- A little bit of extra luck this #FossilFriday the 13th, courtesy of SUE’s wishbone. 🦴 ✨ Thanks to decades of study and research, we made some important scientific updates to our fierce fossil in 2018, including the placement of the skeleton’s furcula, or wishbone. 🦃 This better informed SUE’s shoulder blade positioning, which led to slightly lower arms. 🔍 Learn more about the other updates we made to our apex predator. 🦖 bit.ly/BiggerBetterSUE
