📕 A growing number of states are adopting “foreign agent” laws under the guise of national sovereignty and #security. With securitisation increasingly limiting civic space, James Savage argues that the abuse of state security power has become a systemic and structural issue. He calls on the donor community to shift from a defensive approach to a sustained preventive and transformative one. How? Read more in his article. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e3b7DMHRAuthor: James Savage, Program Director - Enabling Environment for Human Rights Defenders, The Fund for Global Human Rights - Congratulations to Quimy de León—founder of Fund grantee Prensa Comunitaria—on receiving the 2024 International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists. De León has experienced relentless threats from corporate and governmental forces determined to silence Prensa Comunitaria and their team of journalists. They have also faced criminalization for their reporting on land issues and the consequences of extractive operations in Indigenous territories. Through their reporting, the agency elevates the voices of marginalized groups and brings greater visibility to the threats and human rights violations they endure. - Today, as every day, we stand with everyone in the United States and around the world pushing for human rights, dignity, equality, and justice. These are difficult and uncertain times for many of us, but we must remain committed to hope, solidarity, and care in the face of adversity.
- Latest report from SPACES FOR CHANGE on dual-use surveillance tech, securitization, and civic space in Nigeria. It reveals concerning trends regarding how dual-use technologies used for both civilian and military purposes are imported without adequate safeguards and deployed toward purposes different from their originally-declared intent. This is a powerful example of why it’s critical to fund research into the security playbook and the misuse of surveillance tech by authorities. Download and read:

- “Going forward, grantee partners indicate that they would find benefit in collaborative strategic learning practices. A collective mindset and shared strategic approaches are important for grassroots activism and philanthropic allies.”— Alison Miranda, Fund learning and assessment director. Our 2023 Grantee Partner Survey provides a grounded view into the experiences of grassroots activists on the front lines of human rights work. With civic freedoms increasingly restricted and financial support under strain, activists share how they are adapting to sustain their missions. Their responses reveal the innovative approaches and resilience needed to navigate mounting political pressures while continuing to protect vulnerable communities. Read Alison’s reflections on the 2023 Grantee Partner Survey report.
Navigating Toward Hope: Learnings From Our 2023 Grantee Survey https://globalhumanrights.org - "Any funder who wants to deploy its resources toward justice and equality must be aware that continuity is key." Writing in The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Fund directors Clare Gibson Nangle and Marianne M. argue that top-down donor decisions—including strategic pivots, major transitions, and sudden plans to wind down grantmaking—are creating insumountable challenges for grantees. Such donor decisions can have an outsized impact on frontline grantees, especially human rights activists who must already contend with rapidly changing laws and regulations, ongoing conflicts, and environmental crises. As funders, we should be alleviating that sense of uncertainty—not contributing to it. To provide stability and safe harbor for the movements we support, funders must: ➡ work with grantees to better understand how to effectively measure their impact ➡ build long-term relationships with grantees based on solidarity ➡ pursue a two-way approach to trust that openly recognizes power imbalances ➡ learn from our collective experiences and adapt together#philanthropy #trustbasedphilanthropy #humanrights
