- Many personalized cancer treatments aim to block out-of-control signals that drive tumor growth. However, some pathways, like PI3K in breast cancer, have proven challenging to target given their vital role in normal cell processes. - Macrophages play a vital role in the immune system and are implicated in various diseases, especially during chronic inflammation. In a recent Nature Genetics study, our scientists used single-cell CRISPR screening to identify key genetic regulators in macrophages that influence different inflammatory “states.” Their findings highlight potential therapeutic targets that could lead to new treatments for inflammatory diseases. - One of the most commonly mutated genes in breast cancer is PIK3CA, which is found in over 40% of HR+ breast cancers. This mutation occurs when the signaling in the PI3K pathway goes haywire, leading to uncontrolled cell growth. Targeting the PI3K pathway has been a compelling goal, as it enables new ways to fight cancer. Meet Denise Gastaldo, a Postdoctoral Fellow in Neuroscience from Italy, who is studying amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Her research aims to characterize the molecular mechanisms underlying neuroprotection and to identify targets that could prevent neuronal degeneration and promote neuronal survival in ALS. Denise aspires to develop life-changing treatments for brain disorders and lead her own research team.
