🌊✨ This week, Uruguay hosted the 10th International Waters Conference (#IWC10) in Punta del Este, bringing together over 300 delegates from around the world. Under the theme "Transformative actions and impacts for the water and ocean SDGs: The GEF IW response to the global challenge," leaders and experts united to tackle pressing global issues in water and ocean sustainability. The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has been a pivotal force in advancing ocean and freshwater projects, mobilizing over 3billioningrantsand3 billion in grants and 3billioningrantsand19 billion in co-financing across 157 countries over the last 30 years. 🌍💧 Key highlights included GEF’s Fred Boltz opening the conference by reinforcing the importance of cooperation to manage shared marine and freshwater resources and to conserve the natural ecosystems and biodiversity that underpin their productivity and resilience. GEF’s Andrew Hume discussed the opportunities offered by the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (#BBNJ) agreement to promote harmonization and policy coherence, and Verona Collantes-Lebale led a workshop on gender mainstreaming & social inclusion in GEF-IW projects.IW:LEARN launched an interactive digital story map with stories and videos covering 30 successful GEF International Waters projects. 🤝 Explore the map here: https://gef-globe.web.app/ #GEFIW2024Nicolas Marquez Pizzanelli | Alexandre Pinheiro Rego | Ines Benabdallah | Taylor Henshaw | Ministerio de Ambiente, Uruguay | UNESCO | UN Environment Programme | PNUD Uruguay | Ministry of Tourism - Uruguay- +1

The Global Environment Facility has a very specific role in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals as well as the multilateral environmental conventions. So, the decisions being taken here at the UN General Assembly #UNGA are instrumental for organizations like the GEF in our aspiration to have more impact and results from the countries that we work with. The international community has made a lot of progress with the #SDGs but hasn’t been able to address the big gaps associated with mobilization of financial resources. And this is critical in the effort of sustainability. Its not just about mobilizing more resources from the global North to the global South, or from the philanthropic and private sectors. It’s about generating more political coherence in national development policies, plans, and budgeting at the national level. This is because today, most countries still continue to invest more in sectors and activities that destroy nature and contribute to climate change than in ways to reverse it. That is why it is important there are bold and ambitious decisions taken here at the #UNGA with regards to the future. The adoption yesterday of the Pact for the Future is a very good step forward where inclusion, dignity and support to #youth is central.#OurCommonFuture - Global Environment Facility reposted this
𝐏𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐥𝐮𝐬 𝐝’𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 : https://urls.fr/AxrCn8 - Global Environment Facility reposted this

It was an honor to speak on #biodiversity #finance at the "Green Diplomacy II: Peace and Biodiversity, the Road to COP16" event, hosted by the Embassy of Colombia and Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).#Colombia's biodiversity is extraordinary, with over 56,000 species, many found nowhere else. However, preserving this heritage requires innovative financing strategies. Key takeaways from my panel discussion included the need to: ✅ Mobilize domestic resources more efficiently to align with finance for nature. ✅ Generate policy coherence to redirect funds from harmful activities to initiatives that protect our ecosystems. As we approach #COP16Colombia, let’s work together to ensure that our financial systems prioritize nature and promote sustainable development for all.
