- It's #BannedBooksWeek 2024—organized by the American Library Association—and this year's theme is "Freed Between the Lines." Last year, the ALA documented the highest number of titles targeted for censorship since the organization began compiling data more than 20 years ago. Books provide us with a world of freedom, but book bans and censorship threaten our right to read. During Banned Books Week and beyond, let's come together to advocate for literary freedom. - We are proud of Amistad’s participation in a dynamic author panel last week at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference in DC, featuring thought-provoking discussions on storytelling and its impact on culture and history.
I was blessed to spend my second anniversary as editorial director of Amistad Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishing last week in conversation with six of our amazing authors at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s ALC 53 in DC. It felt divinely ordered for Amistad/HarperCollins to be there for many reasons, not the least of which is that we are the home of two important books from Shirley Chisolm, one of the founders of the CBC. Many thanks to News Corp’s Todd Thorpe and Eriade Williams for the opportunity to expand Amistad’s profile and further share our mission, to Shera Higgs Thompson for getting us so well set up for success, and to our publisher Judith Curr and HarperCollins CEO Brian Murray for their unwavering support. *Shoutouts to Paul Olsewski, Courtney Nobile, Tara Parsons, Makayla Tabron, and Daphney Guillaume. *Onsite bookseller at the convention center: Mahogany Books *Reception at Crane’s restaurant, with the delicious creations of Chef Pepe Moncayo * Author roll call: Bakari Sellers (The Moment, My Vanishing Country) April Ryan (Black Women Will Save the World) Alvin Hall (Driving the Green Book) Nana Akua Brew-Hammond (My Parents’ Marriage) Michael Ralph (Before 13th) Megan Giddings (Meet Me at the Crossroads, The Women Could Fly, Lakewood). *Wonderful opportunity to join the Leadership Reception honoring CBC chairman Rep. Steven Horsford- +2

- Yesterday, HarperCollins Publishers joined a landmark lawsuit against the state of Florida to challenge the book removal provisions of HB 1069, an education law that aims to restrict books in school libraries. Penguin Random House, Hachette Book Group, Macmillan Publishers, Simon & Schuster, Sourcebooks, The Authors Guild, bestselling authors Julia Alvarez, Laurie Halse Anderson, John Green, Jodi Picoult, and Angie Thomas, two students, and two parents also joined as plaintiffs. “As publishers dedicated to protecting freedom of expression and the right to read, the rise in book bans across the country continues to demand our collective action. Fighting unconstitutional legislation in Florida and across the country is an urgent priority. We are unwavering in our support for educators, librarians, students, authors, readers—everyone deserves access to books and stories that show different perspectives and viewpoints.” Learn more about the lawsuit: https://lnkd.in/dgkRP_MrDiscover how HarperCollins is fighting censorship: https://lnkd.in/eAi6Ei9F

The Academy offers free training to writers and designers from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds to help them gain the knowledge and skills to succeed in fiction, non-fiction and children’s books. During the six-week course students receive the help of mentors from across HarperCollins and from bestselling authors including Jamila Gavin, Sarah Morgan, June Sarpong, Rebecca F Kuang and Charles Cumming. More info can be found here - https://lnkd.in/deaSyXT. Applications for the next cohort will open in late September, with the six-week course starting in May 2025. - For the fourteenth consecutive year, HarperCollins teamed up with Volunteers of America (VOA) for Operation Backpack, a nonprofit that provides backpacks and school supplies for kids living in New York City shelters. A group of our employees volunteered their time to fill nearly 500 backpacks with dictionaries and children's books that we donated and write a supportive note for each student. A big thank you to our colleagues who participated!
