The angst about getting people back to the office is absolutely misguided because: a) it’s the wrong goal. A better goal is how do we maximize the benefits of in person interaction? B) the real opportunities and challenges are far deeper and broader than where one works but rather how one leads, what work is becoming, the impact of technology, the friction of different mindsets, the rise of new marketplaces, the explosion in gig work and declining and aging populations. The new world of work will require companies to rethink strategies, restructure organizations, retrain the work force, recalculate financials and reimagine what a company is. LinkedIn Post: My Reading Backlog from August 2024 - Short Impressions (3 of 12) "The Leader's Guide to Managing Risk: A Proven Method to Build Resilience and Reliability" by K. Scott Griffith is an insightful addition to the risk management literature. As a follow-up to my previous reading on risk management, I found this book complementary to General McChrystal's "Risk: A User's Manual," offering fresh perspectives and practical approaches. Like McChrystal, Griffith emphasizes the importance of a systematic approach to risk management. Both authors stress the need for organizations to build resilience and reliability in the face of uncertainty. However, Griffith's unique contribution lies in his focus on what he calls the "hidden science" of high reliability. What struck me most about Griffith's approach is his implicit use of transdisciplinarity, though he doesn't explicitly name it as such. He brilliantly synthesizes knowledge from diverse fields including engineering, behavioral psychology, neuroscience, ethics, and law. This multifaceted approach resonates with my experience in project management and ESG, where complex challenges often require insights from various disciplines. Griffith articulates this concept eloquently in a LinkedIn article: "The hidden science synthesizes engineering, behavioral psychology, neuroscience, ethics and the legal system. Harmonizing these specialties solves a fundamental problem: how to achieve sustainable reliability in a complex world. Engineers know system design but don't always understand human behavior because they don't think like typical humans. Psychologists and neuroscientists understand how people think and act, but don't always know how systems work because they don't think like engineers. And lawyers think differently than all of us." (link to article in the comments) This transdisciplinary approach offers a more holistic view of risk management, acknowledging that risks often arise at the intersections of different systems and thought processes. For project managers and ESG professionals, this perspective is invaluable in identifying and mitigating risks that might be overlooked by more traditional, siloed approaches. Griffith's book, like McChrystal's, provides practical tools for building organizational resilience. However, Griffith's focus on the interplay between human behavior, system design, and legal considerations adds another layer of depth to risk management strategies. What a joy to launch LEADING WITH CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE in London this week. So many dear friends and colleagues came together along with some of the amazing team at VML. A very special thank you to Sufia Sheikh-Hussain who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make it happen and to Tasha Gilroy who drew upon her own vast experiences as a Chief Belonging Officer to interview me about the book. Thank you also to Pip Hulbert, CEO of VML for hosting the evening and sitting in the front row, fully engaged in the discussion. And finally, to Ritika Wadhwa, my dear friend and colleague who insisted we do a London launch and did what she always does—made sure this happened and told the world they needed to be there. We live in a very different world than 2009 when the first edition was published, not the least of which is that CQ is no longer a “secret.” But we have so much work to do. The group who showed up inspired me to believe that we’re making progress. The future of the cultural intelligence movement is incredibly bright.- +1
