Since 1951, Hazen and Sawyer has focused on two things: providing safe drinking water and controlling water pollution. Our range of services encompasses the planning, design, and construction management of water and wastewater-related projects – from clean water treatment, storage, and distribution to wastewater and stormwater collection, treatment, and reuse. Our focus brings us exceptional challenges – such as the largest drinking water UV disinfection installation in the world, upgrade of major wastewater treatment plants to reduce nutrient discharges to sensitive receiving waters, and recharging vital drinking water aquifers with highly-treated wastewater effluent, renewing a valuable resource. Our focus also makes us home to many of the world’s most knowledgeable and experienced environmental engineers and scientists, each seeking a challenging and rewarding career while making an important contribution to the communities in which we work. 🌎 One of the first plants in the world to operate the next-gen nutrient removal process known as PANDA (partial nitrification-denitrification-anammox), the Noman M. Cole Jr. Pollution Control Plant in Fairfax County, VA is making history. 🐼 What makes PANDA so revolutionary? It dramatically cuts energy consumption while efficiently treating nitrogen, a critical component in water quality management, using colonies of reddish-colored anammox bacteria. 💧 The plant is still refining the new system with Hazen’s help. 🔮 What will the next-generation of wastewater nutrient removal look like? You don't need a crystal ball. Just checkout these two pilot projects in LA. 🌴 ⚡️ In the world of wastewater, nutrient removal tends to be an energy- and chemical-intensive profess. Next-gen approaches can reduce those costs, simplify operations, and increase treatment capacity. 💧 Hazen partnered with the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts' (LACSD) on two innovative nutrient removal pilots—one using densified activated sludge (DAS) and another using partial nitrification-dentrification-anammox (PANDA)—to see if they could achieve low nutrient targets while saving money. 📈 The results? As the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) kicks off its 40th(!) annual conference next week in Denver, CO, we're reminded that dam safety is a shared responsibility. Maintaining and fortifying dams is essential for water supply, flood control, irrigation, and hydropower. It takes collaboration and hard work to safeguard these critical—and often visually stunning—structures. One such example is the Savage River Dam in Maryland, where Hazen helped the Upper Potomac River Commission replace its gate system on an emergency schedule. The gates control 6.3 billion gallons of water used by hundreds of thousands of people. 🎉 We are thrilled to share that an article co-authored by seven Hazen experts was selected as a 2024 winner of the prestigious Gascoigne Wastewater Treatment Plant Operational Improvement Medal! The award, which will officially be given at WEFTEC 2024, recognizes exciting advancements in water knowledge and practice. The article delves into how densified activated sludge (DAS) can improve sludge settleability while allowing for increasing capacity ratings of existing infrastructure, enabling utilities to get the most out of limited facility footprints. 💧 Rethinking Water Security in a Drier World 🌵 As droughts stretch on in the western U.S., many communities will need to make the most of what’s already there. The Chino Desalter Authority (CDA) made this choice long ago, transforming contaminated groundwater into a clean, reliable supply with advanced treatments like GAC, RO, IX, and air stripping. Customer acceptance of potable reuse: the final frontier. 🚀 From a water supply perspective, that is… As part of a potable reuse feasibility study, Rancho Water asked Hazen to gauge potential community support for the project. We interviewed key stakeholders in the surrounding community, the local government, and the water industry, and surveyed more than 20,000 Rancho Water customers. We learned that while Rancho Water is loved and trusted by its customers, a little education goes a long way in gaining public acceptance of potable reuse. 📰 🚨 New research alert! Three Hazen experts recently published a paper in Chemical Engineering Journal (CEJ) about an innovative pilot project in the Pacific Northwest. The pilot combines four advanced bioprocesses – partial nitrification, endogenous denitrification, PANDA, and enhanced biological phosphorus removal – into one advanced pilot design. Hazen’s Yewei Sun and Bryce Danker, P.E. will be presenting about this promising pilot later today at the Pacific Northwest Clean Water Association Conference in Boise, ID. What to do with all those biosolids? It's becoming a tough question for wastewater plants to answer amid potential new PFAS regulations for biosolids, concerns about their carbon footprint, and the rising cost of treating and transporting them. There's a growing list of new biosolids treatment technologies that could address those problems, but how do you pick the right one for your utility? Hazen has designed a Power BI dashboard that does just that. It covers key details about 36 innovative biosolids technologies such as gasification (shown in the photo) and pyrolysis. And it's just one of a suite of analytical tools we're developing with The Water Research Foundation (WRF) and SYLVIS Environmental Services to help biosolids managers make informed decisions in a rapidly changing biosolids landscape.
