- A chill is in the air and local immigrants need your help! Pennsylvania is in for an especially harsh winter, and for many of our clients, it will be their first time facing such cold weather. By purchasing a coat from our Target registry or hosting a coat drive, you can welcome our new immigrant neighbors with a warm coat in time for the season ahead. 💙 We are accepting new and gently used winter puffer coats (no wool or jackets, please). Target registry: https://lnkd.in/em5hJRaVFor information about hosting a coat drive, please email community@hiaspa.org.
- Don’t miss this unique opportunity to support immigrants and refugees while experiencing the flavors of Georgia! Jet Wine Bar and Georgian restaurant Saami Somi are partnering to hold a Georgian cookout this Saturday, November 16th, from 3:00 – 7:00 PM and they have generously pledged to donate a portion of their sales to HIAS Pennsylvania! The event will be held at Jet Wine Bar, located at 1525 South St. in Philadelphia. There are no tickets – it is first come, first served. Please consider attending to make a difference in the lives of local immigrants while enjoying Georgian food and wine.
- Undocumented communities are experiencing uncertainty about the potential impact of future immigration policies on their lives. "We certainly think some kind of mass deportation without due process would violate the Constitution, so we are working closely with the ACLU," Cathryn Miller-Wilson, Executive Director of HIAS Pennsylvania said. "They would likely file the lawsuit. We would be bringing them plaintiffs. We would be signing amicus briefs, those kinds of things."
Fear rippling across undocumented communities in the Delaware Valley over Trump's mass deportation threats cbsnews.com - Time is running out to register for the Tikkun Olam Volunteer Appreciation Awards! Help us celebrate Mike Raish and our three other incredible honorees on Tuesday, October 29th. Register for you and a friend: https://lnkd.in/eNTqY6qB_____________________________________________ It wasn’t long after Mike arrived in Philadelphia that he began welcoming others. He didn’t know many people in the city and began to volunteer for HIAS Pennsylvania as a way to get involved in his new community, while making a difference. At the beginning of his volunteer journey, Mike delivered groceries to newcomers and enjoyed exploring cultural grocery stores. Later, he took on a new volunteer role, providing Arabic and Spanish translation and interpretation services. Mike finds it fulfilling to remove the language barrier from newcomers who are experiencing so much uncertainty in their lives, while easing some of the stress involved in complicated legal processes. He has demonstrated remarkable empathy, helping others adjust to their new surroundings, while he himself was still adjusting. - Daniele Romano knows firsthand the challenges that immigrants face in America – she lived them herself. When she arrived from France in 1985, she couldn’t use her nursing degree because she didn’t speak English. Instead, she worked as a cashier, earning minimum wage, while studying English. “I think it gives me a special sensitivity to what a foreigner or someone that comes from a different country, not speaking English, goes through,” said Daniele. Now retired, Daniele is dedicated to doing everything she can to ease that transition for newcomers, as a HIAS PA volunteer. She has provided translation and interpretation services at pro bono legal clinics, picked up newly-arrived refugees at the airport, accompanied clients to medical appointments, served as a delivery driver, and provided meals to clients. “It’s fulfilling. You help people trying to find a place in this country. They had to go through so much to get here,” shared Daniele. We are proud to honor Daniele and three other stellar volunteers at the 2024 Tikkun Olam Volunteer Appreciation Awards on Tuesday, October 29th. - The upcoming #election is, in large part, all about #immigration. Strong opinions are held on both sides - whether it helps or hurts the economy, impacts crime, national security and is ultimately beneficial or problematic. But where are the facts? Join us at 8 p.m. EDT on October 28th for a virtual discussion with Wharton Professor, Exequiel (Zeke) Hernandez to learn The Truth About Immigration, a conversation based on his recent book of the same name. Using decades of research and examples, Professor Exequiel slays every myth about immigration, unpacks the complex questions that immigration raises and reveals sometimes startling answers. Register here: https://lnkd.in/eAcjFSzg"The best defense of democracy is an informed electorate", Thomas Jefferson. Learn the facts before you #vote - and make sure your friends, acquaintances, co-workers and family all do too - by joining us on October 28th at 8 p.m. and sharing the registration link widely.
- Michael Ahlert has understood the challenges immigrants face in America for a long time. Before becoming an attorney, he worked in his family’s business, where he saw firsthand the struggles his immigrant coworkers faced. That experience sparked a deep empathy, which has been a driving force in his career. He taught English as a Second Language before studying immigration law in law school. He is committed to helping those with limited resources navigate high-stakes legal processes, and has been passionately serving as a HIAS PA pro bono volunteer for three years. Michael continues to be inspired by the immigrants he serves. He admires their intelligence, ambition, contributions to their communities, and resilience – especially the resilience of the children. We are proud to honor Michael and three other stellar volunteers at the 2024 Tikkun Olam Volunteer Appreciation Awards on Tuesday, October 29th.
