At HOPE Shelters, we engage in case management to help our guests go from #homelesstohoused, but finding housing continues to be a challenge due to a lack of affordable housing across the region.
Even as more people are being housed because of significant federal investments, more and more are experiencing homelessness due to the nationwide lack of affordable housing. The nation’s homeless response system has increased its number of permanent housing beds (Rapid Re-Housing, Permanent Supportive Housing, or other permanent housing) by 251% since 2007. And recent surges in homelessness have been met with a 64% increase in this housing since 2015. But these large increases simply haven’t kept up with the need. Shelter can help a person’s immediate well-being and get them off the streets temporarily, but it is ultimately permanent housing that ultimately ends their experience of homelessness. Without sustained increases in funding, though many communities cannot fully provide enough shelter *or* housing - which hampers their efforts to end homelessness in the long term.
