Misdiagnosis—including missed, delayed, and wrong diagnoses—leads to an estimated 371,000 deaths in the U.S. each year, according to a 2021 study, and 424,000 permanent disabilities. Only heart disease and cancer cause more deaths. In a recent article published in WebMD, Ken Terry writes about the scope of diagnostic error in the United States and how patient engagement is crucial to a correct diagnosis. “Patients are the one constant in the process of diagnosis,” adds Patricia McGaffigan, Vice President at IHI. “They are the experts on themselves and the engine of safety, because they can shine a light on things that may not be visible to health care workers.” Read the full article here: https://go.ihi.org/3YN7Q3y -
