About us
IGSD’s mission is to build resilience by accelerating fast climate mitigation actions to slow near-term warming and self-reinforcing climate feedbacks, avoid catastrophic climate and societal tipping points and limit global temperature to 1.5°C—or at least keep this temperature guardrail in sight. - In addition to tackling CO2, it is essential to quickly reduce potent non-CO2 climate super pollutants to keep warming within the Paris Agreement temperature targets. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is one of these super pollutants. The problem: N2O both warms the climate & depletes the ozone layer. It is 273X more potent at warming the planet than CO2 over a hundred years. Continuing emissions of N2O would also delay recovery of the protective ozone layer. The solution: Because N2O is the most significant ozone-depleting substance not yet regulated by the #MontrealProtocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, and the third most important greenhouse gas, there is a strong case for adding it to the Protocol, starting with controls on the industrial emissions. Learn more: Our new Primer on Anthropogenic Nitrous Oxide provides background for a global campaign to reduce N2O emissions. The Primer explains the sources of N2O, and the benefits of reducing emissions. It covers available cost-effective methods to cut emissions, provides an overview of global governance regimes and initiatives that address N2O, and offers suggestions for strengthening global governance. While mitigation technologies and global in mitigating N2O emissions are improving, more action is needed. Quickly cutting human-caused N2O emissions is essential for the success of any fast climate mitigation strategy for keeping our planet safe.https://lnkd.in/e9Jcj4-g

On our fourth and final day at #COP29, energy levels remained high, with the community focused on important aspects of climate action – including bridging the gap on climate finance, female empowerment, health resilience, and methane reduction. According to estimates, emerging markets need $2.4 trillion every year until the end of the decade if they are to transition their economies away from carbon, adapt to climate impacts, and meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. We’re currently a long way off. While negotiators work out new targets in the Blue Zone, Patch convened a conversation to explore the role of partnerships and carbon markets in unlocking capital at speed and scale. In south Asia, women face a “double burden” – shouldering the impact of climate change while being denied access to the resources required for resilience. Chase India and Global Counsel came together with partners over lunch to launch a new report which finds – when women are empowered through climate finance, the benefits far exceed a positive environmental impact. As weather around the world becomes more extreme and destructive, we are seeing a significant rise in climate-related casualties and health challenges. To explore how we can make health systems and workforces more resilient amid the climate crisis, Seed Global Health arranged a high-level meeting of health ministers, experts, and funders. Methane matters: it’s responsible for at least a quarter of global warming and is over 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as a warming gas. In an event put on by Goals House – featuring the Global Methane Hub, Institute for Governance & Sustainable Development (IGSD) and SEMAFOR – a panel discussed effective regulations, breakthrough technologies, action barriers, and the vital role of public-private partnerships. + That’s a wrap on our time in the old town of Baku! From everyone at the caravanserai - a massive thank you to all our partners and community members who have contributed as part of this week’s impactful and thought-provoking exchanges. We look forward to seeing you soon 🤝🫶🌎- +1

- Long-term success requires that #NDCs be aggressive in terms of ambition and comprehensive in terms of gasses and sectors covered. Nations should include all GHGs in the next NDCs and specify additional ambitious quantitative contributions from methane and other non-CO₂ gasses; this is a critical opportunity to increase overall mitigation ambition, to deliver reduced near-term warming, and to obtain important societal co-benefits.Spark Climate Solutions, Dr. Gabrielle Dreyfus, Climate & Clean Air Coalition https://lnkd.in/eAxb8rka

During today’s #COP29 broadcast on non-CO₂ pollutants with the U.S. Government, I had an unforgettable moment. One of our panelists—a scientist who was instrumental in the original Montreal Protocol—told me that when he read our #BuyMoreTime letter, it felt like he himself had written it. That shared vision reinforces the urgency of our mission. I shared a message close to my heart: We can achieve rapid progress in the climate fight by targeting short-lived climate pollutants like methane. Methane is CO₂'s "aggressive cousin"—86 times more potent but only lasting around 12 years in the atmosphere. By cutting methane emissions, we could reduce warming by up to 0.5°C in the short term. Half a degree may not sound like much, but it could mean the difference between a livable future and irreversible climate tipping points. Curious about the solutions? I explain them here: https://lnkd.in/dct5FVtX – where you can also sign the letter and make your voice heard. Wondering what the U.S. Government thinks of our campaign? Let's talk about N2O. Nitrous Oxide. When I was a kid, I first learned about N2O as being the "laughing gas". The anesthetic gas you inhaled at the dentist's office that helped you relax. As I grew up, I realized that the gas itself is no laughing matter (credit to Donald Wuebbles for first using that phrase for N2O in 2009). Currently, N2O is the most emitted ozone depleting substance and the third most emitted greenhouse gas. And as if that were not enough, N2O is part of a larger nitrogen pollution problem that worsens air quality. But a triple threat also means a triple opportunity. It means that if we tackle N2O from an ozone protection angle, we get to reap great co-benefits of also reducing global warming and improving air quality. At the Montreal Protocol meeting two weeks ago, I had the opportunity to highlight the importance of dealing with N2O and to spotlight the new Global N2O Assessment report by the Climate & Clean Air Coalition that was just released at COP29 Azerbaijan. Let's turn this "N2O Moment" into an "N2O Movement"!
