ICMM brings maritime museum professionals together from all over the world for regular conferences and networking
About us
ICMM is the world’s only international maritime museum network, bringing together museums of every size from 36 countries across 6 continents, as well as others involved in maritime heritage. Founded in 1972, ICMM’s main focus of activities is a biennial Congress hosted by different members around the world (most recently Canada, the Baltic, Chile and Hong Kong). In addition, we offer resources on our website; these include policies on maritime archaeology, historic vessels, and maritime curatorship. We also share Member news and items of maritime interest via our monthly e-newsletter and regular posts on our social media platforms. ICMM is volunteer-run by an Executive Council representing museums from around the world. We also have sub-committees working on various maritime issues, including Maritime Archaeology, Marine Environment and Historic Vessels. Our most important asset is our Network of over 100 Members worldwide, which provides an unparalleled source of knowledge and contacts for maritime museum professionals. Join us and be connected to others around the world who have a passion for maritime heritage!

Last month, more than 60 delegates from a broad range of the UK’s maritime heritage settings, including curators, boatbuilders, conservators, naval architects, vessel operators, nautical archaeologists and volunteers met at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall to discuss current issues and recent projects. This year's UK Maritime Heritage Forum in Falmouth was another wonderful dive into the work and challenges of maritime history practitioners from across the country. Once again, the forum was an opportunity to remind ourselves what a creative, resourceful, resilient and knowledgeable community the maritime heritage world encompasses. In so many ways we heard how maritime heritage is improving people’s lives through engaging with individual’s experiences of ships, boats, lakes, seas, canals and rivers. For the first time at this forum, we heard the voices of coastal communities telling their personal stories first-hand as well as singing sea shanties! Thank you to everyone who came along and joined in, and most particularly to the hard work and enthusiasm of Richard, Stuart, Bob and Lindsey, and all their colleagues at National Maritime Museum Cornwall. The committee are also very grateful for the support from Beckett Rankine, this year’s sponsors. Additionally, my thanks go to the working group of the UKMHN committee, Clare Hunt, Louise Sanger, Louise Macfarlane, Ken Hamilton, Mark Vasey, Clare Ablett. Lastly, thanks to out-going committee member Sally Archer who has been the backbone of this group for more than a decade, thank you for steering us so ably. Finally, at the AGM held during the forum, the following committee members were confirmed by vote:Meredith Greiling – Chair (National Museums Scotland) Clare Hunt – Secretary (The National Museum of the Royal Navy)Louise Sanger (Lloyd's Register Foundation) Emily Malcolm (Glasgow Life)Clare Ablett (National Museums Northern Ireland) Ian Murphy (Merseyside Maritime Museum, National Museums Liverpool) Joanna Mathers (SS Great Britain Trust) New committee members elected: Cat Holt (Dover Museum and Nautical Archaeology Society rep for UKMHN) Louise Macfarlane (Royal Museums Greenwich) Committee members voted on within the last two years and therefore not required to be voted on this year:Ken Hamilton (MSDS Marine) Mark Vasey (Scarborough Maritime Trust)Fiona Greer (The Tall Ship Glenlee & International Congress of Maritime Museums) Ex-officio and therefore not requiring a vote: Hannah Cunliffe (National Historic Ships UK Ships), Paddy Rodgers (Royal Museums Greenwich) Standing down: Sally Archer (International Congress of Maritime Museums/Royal Museums Greenwich) We look forward at seeing you at next year’s forum! Celebrating 50 Years of Vietnamese Settlement in Australia in 2025 The Vietnamese Community in Australia (VCA) NSW Chapter recently hosted a dinner at Canley Heights to fundraise for this milestone occasion. Peter Thang Ha, President of VCA NSW, welcomed Deputy Director Michael Baldwin who spoke about our ambition to exhibit the historic fishing boat "Tự Do" (meaning Freedom), which arrived in 1977 carrying 31 Vietnamese refugees seeking a new life. Additionally, a dedicated Vietnamese panel will be unveiled on the Welcome Wall, Australia's National Monument to Migration.
