- The American Medical Association, the professional association and lobbying organization representing physicians, announced this week that it will advocate for stricter scrutiny and regulation of hospitals' non-profit status, in large part based on their community benefit activity. It's yet another clear signal that non-profit hospitals urgently need to revamp the ways in which they talk about how hospitals benefit their communities. There's good news here. Our firm's national consumer #research provides insights into how providers can move the needle of public opinion on this critical issue and more effectively tell your story. What does it look like for hospitals to lose the trust of physicians? It might look something like yesterday’s vote by the American Medical Association, calling for greater oversight of nonprofit hospitals and the “standardization of charity care policies to ensure such hospitals adhere to their charitable mission and justify their tax-exempt status.” It’s the latest salvo battering trust in US hospitals, deepening their political vulnerability just as a new Congress and new state legislatures are whetting their budget-cutting knives for 2025. It’s not just physicians who have trust issues. Our own research at Jarrard Inc. finds 68% of US adults believe hospitals are “mostly focused on making money,” as compared to, say, providing patient care. There’s political momentum in this swirl of distrust and it’s not moving in hospital's favor. To be sure, hospitals have a powerful story to tell and a grassroots campaign they can absolutely win. Hospitals boast an unequaled local presence, a homegrown would-be coalition of staff and patients, and make massive investments in their communities every year (well, most do). All the winning campaign ingredients are there. But it won’t run itself. The American Hospital Association will certainly join the fray in D.C. But the beating heart of any winning effort is close to home -- in the halls of the hospital, in the local board room, in the community. Thought the political campaign season was over? For hospital leaders, it may be just beginning.#hospitalleadership #hospitalcommunications #hospitaltrust
