- The future is…FemTech. And the momentum is only growing.Melinda French Gates recently announced another $215 million in funding for women’s health, reinforcing what researchers and innovators have been highlighting for years: women’s health is finally being recognized as a global priority. In her recent News and Perspectives article for the Journal of Medical Internet Research, Jenny Castillo Cato, MD, FACEP, JMIR Correspondent and board-certified emergency physician, reports on the evolving sector of female health-focused technological innovation. In “Bridging the Gender Gap in Health Care Innovation: The Evolution of FemTech,” Cato covers how FemTech has the potential to address long-standing inequities in women’s health care by transforming access to medical services, then explores what’s next for this growing field. Labor-saving innovations like remote patient monitoring are increasingly essential and being rapidly deployed to relieve our burdened healthcare systems. Is the infrastructure there to support them? In his first News and Perspectives article for the Journal of Medical Internet Research, digital health researcher and JMIR Correspondent Vincent Peters, PhD reports on how RPM is being implemented in the Netherlands—and why scaling is as much an organizational challenge as a technological one. In “Remote Patient Monitoring Is Scaling Without a Clear Organizational Model: Insights From the Netherlands,” he outlines different organizational models and makes the case for more deliberate, evidence-based approaches to integrating remote care into hospital systems. But scaling may not be the biggest problem anymore. What matters is what gets lost when care becomes more automated, and more digital. We are hosting a free webinar that asks an important question: how do we expand access without diminishing the human relationship that makes mental health care work in the first place? Hosted by the Society of Digital Psychiatry and JMIR Mental Health, the webinar brings together Dr. John Torous, and NAMI Board President Jeff Fladen to ground digital psychiatry in what actually happens in clinics, crisis settings, and lived experience. The future of scholarly publishing is open. JMIR Publications signs a new three-year partnership with MetaROR (MetaResearch Open Review), marking an important step toward a more transparent, efficient, and collaborative research ecosystem. The collaboration will focus on integrating MetaROR’s publish-review-curate platform with JMIR’s innovative publishing ecosystem—specifically its JMIRx overlay journal series, including JMIRx Med and JMIRx Bio. Under the agreement, JMIRx journals will welcome and expedite the editorial processing of article submissions that have undergone open peer review via MetaROR, utilizing MetaROR's comprehensive review reports to streamline the path to publication in a JMIRx journal. “Partnering with MetaROR is a natural step forward in our ongoing mission to champion open science and transparency in scholarly publishing, particularly in the important growing field of metascience, or research on research," said Tiffany I. Leung, MD, MPH, Scientific Editorial Director at JMIR Publications. "We are delighted to welcome JMIR Publications and its JMIRx journals to our network of partner journals," said Ludo Waltman, PhD, Co-Editor-in-Chief of MetaROR. "The overlay model of the JMIRx journals is well-aligned with MetaROR's commitment to preprinting and open peer review. Together, we are creating a more efficient, collaborative, and rewarding environment for researchers and reviewers alike." But here’s the catch: how accurate are they really when it comes to measuring a soccer kick in real-world conditions? An article published in JMIR Research Protocols sets out to tackle that question. They pulled together and evaluated existing studies on wearable tech in soccer kicking, focusing on accuracy, reliability, and validity. Because in modern football, it’s not just about collecting data, it’s about trusting it.
