Last week, Poshmark asked me to speak at their annual conference (PoshFest!) about the Future of the Secondhand Industry, so I figured I'd share some of my key points here and invite some good conversation. One of the reasons I'm so energized by what we're building at Beni is that I believe resale is one of our best tools to combat overproduction and fast fashion. Here's a few reasons why: #1: It's the fastest fashion that exists because the clothes are already made. We just need to do a better job matching the supply with the demand (we're working on it!) #2: Resale allows us to deliver a sustainability win, without needing to rely on people changing their behavior solely with sustainability in mind. Shopping secondhand makes economic sense first and foremost as it allows shoppers to access better brands at lower prices. #3: The future of fashion is increasingly social and the world of resale already has that built into its DNA. Shoppers are buying from other humans and there is an authentic community growing that is hard for fast fashion brands to replicate. #4: The timing is right. The stigma around buying something used has largely gone away and has been replaced by an immense sense of pride. More than ever, people love to brag and say 'Thanks, it's thrifted'. This cultural currency is powerful and creates strong consumer pull for more investment and innovation in the space. What am I missing? What makes you excited about the future of secondhand? The Beni team just got bigger. Last week, we kicked off an exciting summer program with a group of nine incredibly talented women — from college and MBA students to consultants. What will they be doing? Glad you asked! ⬇️ As you know, we’re on a mission at Beni to make resale as easy as buying new. And while we currently help 75k+ users find great resale deals while they shop, they tend to stick to a standard lineup of sites like Revolve, Zara, Reformation, Nordstrom, Madewell, etc. (which is great, but just scratching the surface!). As the world’s largest aggregated database of online resale, we have 300M+ items in our inventory and millions more are getting added every day. What does this mean? Basically that we can find pretty much anything you’re shopping for secondhand, and we've enlisted the help of these women to prove it to you by making curated collections of the best finds for all sorts of different needs. Think: collections of hiking gear from Patagonia Worn Wear for the outdoor enthusiasts, bridal wear from Rowely for the brides-to-be, back-to-school clothes from Kidizen for the moms, and more. So, comment below if there's something on your shopping list, and we'll use Beni to find it for you, for less, secondhand. Has anyone ever used Beni? We added shopping with Beni to our Mammoth Climate Challenges recently, and I’ve been LOVING it. Their Chrome extension automatically searches secondhand sites for products similar to ones you’re looking at from retailers (like the Girlfriend Collective search I was just doing!) It’s a great nudge to easily find the same products for less money, and more impact #climatechallenge
