Coaches are the key to helping ensure that our Little Leaguers are able to learn life lessons through the game of baseball and softball. Check out our key takeaways from the Top 5 Coaching Trends in the Aspen Institute Sports & Society #ProjectPlay 2024 State of Play Report: 1) Parent Value Trustworthy and Trained Coaches: We know how important this is for all parents, and are focused on continuing to provide education and training opportunities for our volunteer coaches throughout the year, both on and off the field. With a variety of different options available at LittleLeague.org/Training as well as Little League University, we continue to find ways to educate our volunteers, whether they are a first-time coach or a veteran manager. 2) California Aims to Train 25,000 Coaches in Positive Youth Coaching by 2025: As a member of the Million Coaches Challenge (MCC) Cohort, we are excited to see this continued effort in California. Our Diamond Leader Training Program has helped train more than 120,000 coaches and counting on the social and emotional well-being of children, and we are excited to see more partners join in this great cause. 3) Older Citizens Have Returned to Help Coach Children: Little League is a place for everyone, and we have seen first-hand how many people come back to help coach within their community regardless of age. One of our core values is focused on Community, and it’s great to see generations of Little League experience and life lessons continuing to be taught in our programs around the world each year. 4) More Coaches Have Been Trained At Least Once, But Training Are Less Frequent: By making our training easy and accessible, as well as requiring some annual trainings like Abuse Awareness, we are doing everything we can to help train our volunteers as often as possible, especially when focused on the well-being of our young athletes. 5) States Increasingly Recognize the Value of Mental Health Training for Coaches: We know how important the mental well-being of our young athletes is, which is why we launched our Diamond Leader Training Program and have put together a variety of resources for our parents, players, and volunteers at League.org/MentalHealth and we’re also proud to work with our friends at Major League Baseball (MLB) to help increase mental health awareness and support through their Crisis Text Line, a free, 24/7, confidential text-based mental health service.
