- It’s been a while since we checked in with our community living folks, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t been busy. Intrada has been bustling with activity! From participating in this year’s election, learning about preparing healthy meals, and meeting horse jockeys, it has been a fun-filled season for the individuals at Intrada! Let’s see what they’ve been up to: • Michael, a big horse racing fan, looks forward to Saratoga Race Track season every year and always grabs a season pass. Recently, while picking up his favorite Dunkin treat, he had an unforgettable encounter – he met his all-time favorite jockeys, the famous brothers Irad and Jose Ortiz from the New York racing circuit. • The individuals at Intrada recently enjoyed a visit from Judy Carr, a nutritionist from Saratoga Hospital, who stopped by to discuss healthy eating and meal preparation. Judy answered questions about nutritious foods and shared tips for making healthier choices. She plans to return after the holidays to continue supporting them on their journey to healthier eating. • Recently, Lynda and Emily were thrilled to vote, accompanied by their community habilitation staff member, Michelle. They chose to participate in early voting and eagerly went to their polling place to cast their ballots. Before the election, the staff at Intrada helped residents check their voter registration to ensure they were ready. As early voting began community habilitation staff assisted anyone interested in voting, helping them to find their polling place and accompanying them as needed. Thanks to the support from staff, individuals living at Intrada were able to exercise their right to vote both during early voting and on Election Day. The Community Living Program at Living Resources provides independent living for disabled adults. The mission of the Community Living Program is to provide quality and consistent habilitation services to individuals living in the community in various settings. Such services may include, but are not limited to, assistance with activities of daily life, socialization activities, recreational activities, general household maintenance, as well as teaching independent living skills for individuals with disabilities. - In a democracy, every voice matters. This fundamental principle should extend to all citizens, regardless of their abilities. Individuals with developmental disabilities are often overlooked or marginalized, but their right to vote is just as important as anyone else’s. We are incredibly proud of the individuals who have voted for the very first time this year. For example, 18 individuals in The College Experience Program registered and voted for the first time ever. Al, who is 75 years old exercised his right to vote for the very first time this year. 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬 Historically, individuals with developmental disabilities have faced significant barriers to voting. These obstacles can include: • Misconceptions: Harmful stereotypes and misconceptions about their cognitive abilities can lead to doubts about their capacity to make informed decisions. • Legal Hurdles: Complex registration processes and outdated laws can create unnecessary challenges. • Lack of Support: Without adequate assistance and accommodations, many individuals with developmental disabilities may find it difficult to navigate the voting process independently. • Lack of Transportation: Many individuals with disabilities rely on public transportation or rides from their support system to help them navigate their communities. With a lack of transportation comes a lack of access to the community, including polling centers. This is why Living Resources is seeking donations to purchase a new wheelchair van! Donate now at https://lnkd.in/gZUNiXkU to help us eliminate barriers to transportation. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐕𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 To ensure that individuals with developmental disabilities fully participate in the democratic process, we can take the following steps: • Educate ourselves: Learn about the rights and needs of individuals with developmental disabilities. • Advocate for inclusive policies: Support legislation that protects the voting rights of all citizens. • Volunteer as poll workers: Help to create accessible polling places and assist voters with disabilities. • Provide voter education: Offer clear and concise information about candidates and issues in accessible formats. - Halloween may have come and gone, but the memories (and leftover treats) are still very much alive! This year, Living Resources went all out, transforming the office and our programs across the capital region into hubs of spooky, sweet celebration. From vampires to superheroes, our staff and participants truly brought the Halloween spirit to life. And let’s not forget the endless supply of candy and treats! At our main office, the excitement was palpable as trick-or-treaters made their rounds. Whether dressed in elaborate costumes or coming just as themselves, everyone joined in the fun, creating an atmosphere that was both festive and heartwarming. These gatherings were more than just Halloween fun—they were a reminder of the incredible sense of community we share. A huge thank you to our staff and supporters for making it all possible! Your generosity helped fill our Halloween with joy, laughter, and a spirit of inclusion. Here’s to many more celebrations together at Living Resources!
