Marvell Technology kicks off 2025 with unveiling its new CPO capabilities focused on the advancement of its custom XPU architecture. The move builds on its custom high-bandwidth memory (HBM) compute architecture initiative, announced at its Marvell Industry Analyst event in December 2024. It aimed at improving the total cost of ownership (TCO), efficiency, and performance of the custom XPU offerings of its custom silicon customers. Marvell is now enabling customers to integrate CPO into their next-generation custom XPUs and scale up the size of their AI servers from tens of XPUs within a rack currently using copper interconnects to hundreds across multiple racks using CPO, enhancing AI server performance. Overall, I believe Marvell’s CPO portfolio can play an integral role in further demystifying using customization in the XPU architecture design process and outcomes. As a result, the Marvell custom AI accelerator with CPO architecture can further incentivize cloud hyperscalers to develop custom XPUs that will significantly increase the density and performance of their AI servers. The integration of optics directly into XPUs represents a significant advancement in custom accelerated infrastructure, enabling hyperscalers to meet the escalating demands of AI applications through enhanced scalability and optimization.Michael Kanellos Nigel Alvares Stacey Keegan Will Chu Chris Koopmans Sandeep Bharathi Noam Mizrahi Raghib Hussain Kim Markle Sonya Gary Bill Ruff Eric Bruce Stephanie Lendecky Dion Hinchcliffe

CPO Architecture for AI Accelerator Implementations Following on from the next-generation silicon photonics technology that the company announced last year, Marvell Technology is further progressing its custom auxiliary processing unit (XPU) architecture with co-packaged optics (CPO). This architecture will enable a significant boosting in the performance of artificial intelligence (AI) servers by avoid reliance on copper interconnects between constituent semiconductor dies. It leverages the custom high-bandwidth memory (HBM) compute architecture that it recently announced, plus 3D SiPho Engines for providing high-speed optical connectivity. “The Marvell custom AI accelerator with CPO architecture enables cloud hyperscalers to develop custom XPUs that will significantly increase the density and performance of their AI servers,” notes Will Chu, SVP for Custom, Compute & Storage at Marvell. “Integrating optics directly into XPUs takes custom accelerated infrastructure to the next level of scale and optimisation that hyperscalers must deliver to satisfy the growing demands of AI applications.” “AI scale-up servers require connectivity with higher signalling speeds and longer distances to support unprecedented XPU cluster sizes,” adds Nick Kucharewski, SVP for Network Switching at Marvell. “Integrating co-packaged optics into custom XPUs is the logical next step to scale performance with higher interconnect bandwidths and longer reach.”Radha Nagarajan, Marvell’s SVP for Optical Platforms, concludes; “Silicon photonics is vital for scaling accelerated infrastructure connectivity to.... When scaling AI infrastructure, the scale of the workload plays a crucial role in determining the right architectural choices. For small datasets or narrow inference tasks, a single compute rack using copper interconnects might suffice. Large training workloads with trillions of parameters are another thing entirely. Here, optics is the key, allowing for massive scalability—even if it means adapting to additional latency. The choice between copper and optics isn't just about technology preferences. It's about aligning the infrastructure with the nature of the workload. More on that in this video featuring Nick Kucharewski, Senior VP and General Manager at Marvell, Network Switching Business Unit, and Achyut Shah, Senior VP and General Manager, Connectivity Business Unit at Marvell, in their robust conversation with Patrick Moorhead, Founder, CEO and Chief Analyst for Moor Insights & Strategy: https://mrvl.co/3E9jNJW -

It's been a busy and productive week at CES! There is a tremendous amount of energy and excitement around the opportunities ahead. #marvell - AI is redefining the data center—and Marvell is leading the charge. For decades, computer architects have envisioned the performance gains optical interconnects could bring to servers and processors. With AI, this vision is finally becoming reality. Marvell is integrating co-packaged optics (CPO) technology into custom AI accelerators, powered by the company’s groundbreaking 6.4Tbps 3D SiPho Engine. This innovation enables faster, more efficient data transmission and unlocks the potential for AI systems with unprecedented scale and performance. Why it matters: ↪ Scale-up networks powered by CPO can drastically reduce cost, latency and energy consumption. ↪ AI training clusters and inference servers can now scale beyond the limits of copper interconnects. ↪ Future-ready… The shift to 200G per lane and custom XPUs demands optical solutions. With CPO, XPUs aren’t just components—they’re transforming into building blocks for the supercomputers of tomorrow. AI is reshaping how the industry computes. Marvell is making sure it happens smarter, faster and greener. Want to know more? This blog has greater insights: https://mrvl.co/3BZiBIL
