The Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC), originally founded as the Maryland Historical Society in 1844, is the state’s oldest continuously operating cultural institution. In keeping with the founders’ commitment to preserve the remnants of Maryland’s past, the MCHC remains the premier institution for state history. With over 350,000 objects and seven million books and documents, this institution now serves upward of 100,000 people through its museum, library, press, and educational programs.

From the 1700s to the late 1800s, the pantries of many Americans doubled as galleries of unique folk art: artfully crafted, salt-glazed vessels decorated with animals, landscapes, and caricatures rendered in blue cobalt oxide. Baltimore was an epicenter of stoneware production that shaped the technique, style, and taste of crocks throughout the Eastern Seaboard. On Saturday, November 2, Leadership Level MCHC members gathered in Sparks, Maryland, at the nation’s preeminent stoneware auction house, Crocker Farm. Attendees got a sneak preview of their Fall 2024 auction and learned about our region’s formative role in this American art form. November 1 is Maryland Emancipation Day, marking the date when a new state constitution ended the institution of slavery in 1864. This made Maryland one of the earliest states to abolish slavery, a full year ahead of the 13th Amendment. While the Emancipation Proclamation had been produced in January 1863, it did not apply to states like Maryland that had not seceded from the Union. There are numerous commemorative events happening around the state, as well as educational resources to support greater understanding. Fall means changing colors, cooler temperatures... and new interns! MCHC is pleased to welcome our new Joseph Kohl Digitization Intern, Sydney Arcuri. Sydney just graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a dual degree in Museum Studies and Sociology and Anthropology, along with a minor in Archaeology and an immersion in American Sign Language and Deaf Culture Studies. The Joseph Kohl Digitization Internship at MCHC internship focuses on the digitization of our library collections, giving students hands-on technical experience in object handling, digital imaging, technical writing, inclusive language, and digital accessibility. Joseph Kohl was a prolific fine art and studio photographer who captured the diversity of Baltimore life, and this internship is generously funded by the Kohl family in his memory. You can see some of Kohl's photographs on view now in the exhibition “Collecting Maryland: Art, Artifacts, Community.” Look out for information about Spring 2025 internship opportunities this December!

Mallows Bay is a beautiful spot, rich in history and natural wonder, and I'm so glad we're working in partnership with the community to conserve the historic and cultural resources of the area and promote local tourism.
Join us next Wednesday, October 16, at 6pm for a FREE virtual program about maritime law in the wake of the tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The catastrophic impact of the container ship Dali with Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge in March 2024, which caused six deaths and destroyed the bridge in seconds, is a story of modern-day shipping and the practical, legal, and economic consequences of such a disaster. The losses and damages resulting from the casualty are enormous, with estimated costs of salvage, rebuilding the bridge, and other direct costs exceeding funds available for compensation. Can injured parties achieve fair redress? The case, now in federal district court in Baltimore, presents important questions under an often-criticized maritime statute from the Civil War era and related doctrines. Two experienced Baltimore maritime law practitioners, James R. Jeffcoat and James W. Constable, will explore the tragic event as well as the history and impact of existing legislation, in a discussion moderated by Kate Livie, Chesapeake maritime historian, author, and educator. Governor Wes Moore declared 2024 to be the Year of Civil Rights in Maryland, and MCHC invites local educators to participate in the upcoming program Maryland in the Movement: Resources for Teaching Civil Rights in the Classroom. MCHC welcomes educators at any level to join us on Friday, October 18, to learn about the many unique stories represented in the “Passion & Purpose: Voices of Civil Rights Activists” exhibition, from activist luminaries like Thurgood Marshall and Gloria Richardson to Dr. Lillie Carroll Jackson and Judge Robert M. Bell. Participating teachers will tour the exhibition with MCHC education staff and Marcus Nicks, the Assistant Director of Silas Craft Collegians at Howard County Community College, as well as handle original materials from the MCHC Library collection, and leave with materials to support classroom instruction. In the spirit of Halloween, October’s edition featured this 1944 snapshot by A. Aubrey Bodine of an interior view of A. T. Jones and Sons costume company, once located on 823 North Howard Street in Baltimore, Maryland. While at this location, the shop had 17 different rooms full of costume materials. The company was founded in 1868 and had one of the largest assortments of costumes and props in the United States at the time.
