- Our patients are often our colleagues, working right next to us. Katrina Porch, medical office assistant in the Cancer Institute, and another associate were working when the associate mentioned that she had a headache. Katrina encouraged the associate to take some medication. The associate followed Katrina's advice, but the headache persisted. Then, Katrina noticed her colleague suddenly stopped communicating with a patient and was staring blankly. Recognizing that something was terribly wrong, Katrina immediately stepped in, directed the patient to her own desk, and called for a nurse, who quickly called our Rapid Response team. Thanks to Katrina, the associate received the urgent medical attention, which led to the discovery that she was experiencing a stroke. For her swift action and care, Katrina received a SPIRIT Shout Out from President Gregory J. Argyros, MD. Thank you, Katrina, for being a lifesaver and an amazing colleague!

In this post-COVID era of nurse dissatisfaction, disengagement, and burnout, there’s a different story unfolding at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. It’s a tale of record-level recruitment, stabilized retention, and increasing engagement. At the heart, it’s about a skyrocketing culture of recognition. This new chapter is being written thanks in large part to the hospital’s “mission control” team and at the helm is director of Nurse Engagement and Retention Julia Fisher. Under Julia’s leadership, the department has launched the bi-annual Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) Excellence Awards, the DAISY Foundation® Award for Extraordinary Nurses, the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurse Leaders, and the Sunshine Award for Exceptional Associates. Julia also helps manage our Nursing Excellence Council, which led our National Nurses Week celebrations, including the hospital’s Nurses’ Choice Awards, which recognized 38 honorees in FY24. Congratulations, Julia, on being selected as the Board Leader of the Quarter! We are proud to have you on our ONE TEAM! L-R: President Gregory J. Argyros, MD; Julia Fisher; Chief Nursing Officer Ariam Yitbarek; and Board Chair Stanley Gutkowski - Congratulations to the first graduating class of the Surgical Technology Apprentice Program at MedStar Health. This pioneering program, a collaboration with Howard Community College and Prince George's Community College, selected 25 aspiring associates from a competitive pool of 600 applicants in October 2023. Following nine months of extensive learning and training, apprentices transitioned to supporting surgical cases for an additional three months, balancing their current part-time roles while meeting the program’s requirements. Their successful completion marks a significant milestone with the exceptional graduates representing the inaugural class. Graduates now have assumed surgical technologist roles across MedStar Health, becoming essential members of our Perioperative Services team. Way to go! May each one of you reach every height of success! Eight graduates hail from MedStar Washington Hospital Center: FRONT SEATED ROW: far left Taceya Lawson, and far right Jacqueline Ruiz MIDDLE ROW: far left Vincent Suggs, and far right Rochelle Green TOP ROW: fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth positions from the left, respectively: Fredy Reyes, Leticia Alvarenga, Donte Leake, and Shantia Holland
