MedStar Washington Hospital Center is a not-for-profit, 912-bed, teaching and research hospital in the nation’s capital, and is a major referral center for treating the region’s most complex cases. Its cardiology program is highly acclaimed, and its cardiac surgery program has consistently earned the highest national rating–three stars–from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. MedStar Washington operates the region’s first Comprehensive Stroke Center and the District’s only Cardiac Ventricular Assist Device program, both certified by The Joint Commission. The hospital is also home to MedSTAR, a nationally verified level I trauma center with a state-of-the-art fleet of helicopters and ambulances, and also operates the region’s only adult Burn Center.

- Our patients are often our colleagues, working right next to us. Katrina Porch, medical office assistant in the Cancer Institute, and another associate were working when the associate mentioned that she had a headache. Katrina encouraged the associate to take some medication. The associate followed Katrina's advice, but the headache persisted. Then, Katrina noticed her colleague suddenly stopped communicating with a patient and was staring blankly. Recognizing that something was terribly wrong, Katrina immediately stepped in, directed the patient to her own desk, and called for a nurse, who quickly called our Rapid Response team. Thanks to Katrina, the associate received the urgent medical attention, which led to the discovery that she was experiencing a stroke. For her swift action and care, Katrina received a SPIRIT Shout Out from President Gregory J. Argyros, MD. Thank you, Katrina, for being a lifesaver and an amazing colleague!

In this post-COVID era of nurse dissatisfaction, disengagement, and burnout, there’s a different story unfolding at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. It’s a tale of record-level recruitment, stabilized retention, and increasing engagement. At the heart, it’s about a skyrocketing culture of recognition. This new chapter is being written thanks in large part to the hospital’s “mission control” team and at the helm is director of Nurse Engagement and Retention Julia Fisher. Under Julia’s leadership, the department has launched the bi-annual Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) Excellence Awards, the DAISY Foundation® Award for Extraordinary Nurses, the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurse Leaders, and the Sunshine Award for Exceptional Associates. Julia also helps manage our Nursing Excellence Council, which led our National Nurses Week celebrations, including the hospital’s Nurses’ Choice Awards, which recognized 38 honorees in FY24.
