About us
The Mission Possible Partnership supports public and private sector partners working on the industry transition towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The Partnership is a coalition initiative working on creating tipping points across the hard-to-abate sectors to set the industry on a net-zero pathway through public-private collaboration, innovation partnerships, and industry alliances. It is comprised of a range of alliances and initiatives: aviation, circular cars, heavy-duty road transport, shipping, aluminium, chemicals, cement and concrete, and iron and steel. Collaboration between business and government leaders, academic researchers, and civil society is key to unlocking industry decarbonization pathways. From financing innovative technologies to improving efficiency along value chains, we aim to unlock innovative solutions and enabling policies for the industry transition.

- Fast-tracking the Green Industrial Revolution is Mission Possible! ๐๐ข๐ A new report by Mission Possible Partnership and Bezos Earth Fund reveals a toolbox of instruments for G20 governments to unlock a boom in low-carbon fertilisers, fuels, and essential materials within 10 years. The report, โUnleashing Market Forces to Scale Green Industry: The Role of Green Market Makersโ, is published today at โGreen Markets Dayโ at #ClimateWeekNYC and demonstrates: - Economies of scale for green commodities can be achieved within a decade pushing them closer to parity with fossil-based equivalents. - G20 countries can accelerate the uptake of low-carbon products whilst optimising use of public funds and ensuring future industrial competitiveness. - #GreenAmmonia, #SustainableAviationFuels, #GreenSteel, and low-carbon cement markets are identified as priorities for rapid expansion through โGreen Market Makersโ. The report has been developed by a working group comprising MPP and Bezos Earth Fund alongside RMI, Systemiq Ltd., Bain & Company, Center for Green Market Activation (GMA), H2Global Foundation, J.P. Morgan, and Morrison Foerster. Among the different mechanisms available, Green Market Makers (GMMs)โinnovative intermediaries between sellers and buyersโare revealed as one of the most efficient ways to deploy public funds for scaling up industry transitions. GMMs are deemed a โgame-changerโ for green ammonia, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), green steel, and low-carbon cement, capable of fast-tracking low-carbon commodity markets โ comprising products that are essential building blocks of a decarbonised economy, on which agriculture, green buildings, green manufacturing, and other industries will rely. The full report provides a toolbox for policymakers, industrial companies, and financial institutions, urging the deployment of GMMs with government-backed funds as a critical way to catapult early markets for low-CO2 solutions. ๐Back from NY, I will share some reflections on #ClimateWeekNYC over the course of the next days. ๐กToday: Ideas worth spreading ๐คTo some extent, NYCW very much feels like an extended opportunity to reconnect with fellow travellers and friends of the climate community. One sometimes wonders why so many Europeans need to cross the Atlantic to do so. ๐ฃBeyond the sheer time efficiency of meeting so many partners over one week, the real usefulness of this climate community echo chamber is to share "ideas worth spreading" as the famous TED tagline says. So success lies in one key ingredient: novel ideas (or old, previously disregarded ones whose time has come)! As far as Mission Possible Partnership & Industrial Transition Accelerator (ITA) are concerned, we came to town with 3 key ideas on how to unlock $700bn of investment in green industrial projects: 1๏ธโฃ๐ฐSubsidies to industry is a helpful but insufficient lever to unlock investment. Even in the US, with the most generous subsidy package outside of China, projects still struggle to reach Final Investment Decision (FID). We shared learnings captured by Catherine McFarlane from our work in the Gulf Coast & California supported by Bezos Earth Fund & delivered in collaboration with RMI in this paper: https://shorturl.at/bGseL2๏ธโฃ๐Project developers tell us that the most critical missing piece to underpin the investment case is demand for green commodities from buyers willing to pay a price premium. Voluntary demand efforts that have enabled investment in the first few green industrial plants have reached a ceiling, and now is the time to embed green demand structurally through policies like mandates and carbon pricing. > Reuters picked up the idea: https://lnkd.in/eFS6GnJz. > A more detailed policy playbook is cooking which we'll launch before COP. > What is also essential to execute on both voluntary and policy-driven demand are robust low/zero-carbon product standards. We just published a map to help governments and companies navigate this landscape, by Marc Farre Moutinho & our partners at RMI: https://lnkd.in/eyi2WwH93๏ธโฃ๐ฑWe have also joined forces with Bezos Earth Fund, Systemiq Ltd., RMI and many others to highlight the potential of #GreenMarketMakers, intermediaries that buy and sell green commodities, playing a trading role, bridging the remaining gap between price proposed by the producers and willingness to pay of the buyers, adapting to the contract terms that each side prefers, and absorbing transaction risks. Our colleagues at H2Global Foundation have brilliantly pioneered this model. Find out more in our report, tirelessly developed by Peter Goult & Philip Lake: https://lnkd.in/eHSyB2M9--- For more reflections on #ClimateWeekNYC, stay tuned & refer back to past posts: 1. On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of taking the stage alongside Paul Bodnar, Markus Exenberger, Allison Saegh-Fleming, Faustine Delasalle and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s David Crane to talk about our new report which unveils Green Market Makers (GMMs)โinnovative intermediaries between sellers and buyersโas one of the most efficient ways to deploy public funds for scaling up industry transition. We had a lively conversation about green premiums, market acceleration instruments, and the challenges still facing many commodity sectors. But we are making progress! And with the support of governments, a tipping point could be reached in all green commodity markets sooner than anyone expected. โUnleashing Market Forces to Scale Green Industry: The Role of Green Market Makersโ, outlines the opportunity to unlock global uptake of low-carbon fertilisers, fuels, and materials and bring them to exponential growth within a decade. The report was developed by RMI, Mission Possible Partnership, and Bezos Earth Fund, alongside Systemiq Ltd., Bain & Company, Center for Green Market Activation (GMA), H2Global Foundation, J.P. Morgan, and Morrison Foerster. The time is now to #UnleashGreenMarketMakers! Weโre pleased to be part of the working group who collaborated on the milestone report issued Tuesday by Mission Possible Partnership and Bezos Earth Fund, โUnleashing market forces to scale green industry: the role of Green Market Makersโ. We applaud their efforts and those of the other working group contributors including RMI, Systemiq Ltd., Bain & Company, H2Global Foundation, J.P. Morgan and Morrison Foerster in bringing these important messages to the forefront. GMA is spotlighted in the report as an organization โleading the wayโ through our work pioneering approaches like book-and-claim and collective procurement to send clear demand signals and channel corporate climate ambition into signed contracts for green goods and services. Continued partnerships and proven systems and approaches like those profiled will help green markets reach essential tipping points that allow the scaling of low and zero carbon technologies to speed the transition to a decarbonized economy. Thanks to the 500 leaders, practitioners, and experts who joined the inaugural #GreenMarketsDay24! What an inspiring day showcasing how green fuels and materials are taking off โ and the challenges to scaling them fast. Hosted at J.P. Morgan โ with co-organizers Center for Green Market Activation (GMA), H2Global Foundation, Mission Possible Partnership, RMI, and Bain & Company โ Green Markets Day served as a flagship event of #NewYorkClimateWeek. Just a few of the highlights: 1. John Podesta, President Bidenโs senior advisor for climate change, kicked us off by framing the role of governments as enabling private sector-led green markets. He highlighted book-and-claim systems as a key solution to decouple environmental attributes (like carbon reductions) from physical goods and monetize them separately. 2. Faustine Delasalle, CEO of Mission Possible Partnership, described an exciting new class of public-private entities โ Green Market Makers โ that jump-start nascent green commodity markets. Check out the how-to guide โUnleashing Market Forces to Scale Green Industry: The Role of Green Market Makers," which launched at Green Markets Day: https://bit.ly/3N3ckxu3. Book-and-claim systems are proving effective for aviation and shipping, and #GreenMarketsDay24 saw the launch of the next system for cement and concrete with a dynamic discussion including representatives from Center for Green Market Activation (GMA), RMI, Brimstone , Meta , and Prologis, moderated by Leslie Biddle, Deputy Under Secretary for Commercialization and Finance, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). 3๏ธ. Bezos Earth Fund CEO Andrew Steer, in conversation with U.S. Deputy Energy Secretary David Turk and former U.S. Deputy Treasury Secretary Sarah Bloom Raskin, highlighted the importance of international coordination to accelerate sectoral tipping points and scale green commodity markets. 4๏ธ. Paul Bodnar (Bezos Earth Fund), David Crane (U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Under Secretary), Allison Saegh-Fleming (J.P. Morgan), Bryan Fisher (RMI), and Markus Exenberger (H2Global Foundation), unpacked how green market makers โ like H2Global โ can overcome the mismatch in expectations between green commodity producers and end-users in the early days of new markets. 5. We spotlighted clean ammonia as a particularly important green commodity ripe for a market maker โ a CEO panel featuring Roeland Baan (Topsoe), Hans-Olav Raen (Yara Clean Ammonia), Alzbeta Klein, CFA (International Fertilizer Association (IFA)), and Timo Bollerhey (H2Global), moderated by Cate Hight of Bain & Company. Exciting opportunities lie ahead! A big thank you to everyone who joined. Stay tuned for what's next!- +4
