Updates
- Nuna's excitement when it's finally time to eat again after having a nap.
- Did you know that beluga whales like Kela are the only whales with a flexible neck so that they can turn their head from side to side?
- We couldn't have asked for a better day for this weekend’s Belugas Count event. It was a warm, clear, beautiful Alaska day, and as soon as we arrived to set up at Bird Point, we were greeted by a pod of 20-30 belugas swimming nearby! We had a great public turnout at both the viewing station and the Alaska Zoo, and I had so many great conversations about the Cook Inlet Belugas, and what Mystic Aquarium and the other partner organizations are doing to help study and preserve this endangered population. It was an amazing experience, and I'm so glad to be able to share it with all of you following along!

- September Snoot Sunday, a collection of snoots. Double snoot edition.
- My name is Stacie Cole, and I am the Supervisor of Belugas at Mystic Aquarium. For the next few days, instead of working in Mystic, I have the amazing opportunity to work in Anchorage, Alaska instead! Why Alaska? Well, Cook Inlet, Alaska is home to an endangered population of belugas (a population estimated to consist of only 330 individuals) and our team at Mystic has committed to working alongside NOAA Fisheries and many other partner organizations to host their annual Belugas Count! event this Saturday. Belugas Count! is Alaska’s largest one-day marine mammal educational event, aimed at raising awareness of the plight of the Cook Inlet Belugas and sharing how the public—local, national, and internationally—can support the populations recovery. The event is a collaboration among government agencies, universities, non-profit organizations, Tribes, industry, zoos and aquaria across the country, and I am excited to be able to share all of the research and training taking place at Mystic Aquarium that directly benefits the Cook Inlet beluga population.
- September Snoot Sunday, a collection of snoots. This week featuring Pearl, the harbor seal!
- September Snoot Sunday, a collection of snoots. Northern fur seal edition.
- 👀 👀 👀 Did you know a giant grouper's eyes can rotate without moving its head and function effectively in dim light, which helps it see its prey during dawn and dusk feeding times.
- Welcome to our first installment of: September Snoot Sunday, a collection of snoots. First up is Clara, the California sea lion!
- Since penguins spend time in water, how are they able to stay warm and dry? By preening! This behavior is when an African penguin uses their beak to spread preen oil from their tail to the rest of their feathers which makes them waterproof. They often get a helping "beak" from a mate for those hard to reach spots!
