- #StoriesofNSA #Retired - I had no master plan, frankly it was happenstance. My senior year in college, I was walking across campus, and I saw a bulletin board advertising a test at NSA. A buddy of mine and I got in the car and drove to Minneapolis to take the test. By the end of the year, I was working at NSA as a Russian language analyst. I had always been interested in public service, my degree was in International Relations but I had only heard vaguely about NSA. Frankly when I got the job offer, I was already working on Capitol Hill but I went to NSA to get paid a little bit more. The other reason was I thought it would be kinda cool. Fast forward nearly 40 years, I was getting paid more -- but it wasn't just cool, it was very very cool. I was surprised about the breadth of opportunities to do lots of different things, and that NSA provides intelligence related to almost every international news story that you see. When I was getting ready to travel to Iraq for the first time, I was thinking "I didn't expect this." The first time I gave a public speech, I thought "I didn't expect this." Throughout the course of my career, extensive travel (including to combat zones), White House briefings, meeting the President and U.S. national security officials, testifying before Congress, testifying before the FISA court, meeting with numerous foreign government intelligence and national security officials, I didn’t expect any of that. While working with senior officials across the U.S. and overseas, I noted they would say some smart things and some not-so-smart things. It was obvious that they were just people, just like you and me. It doesn't matter what job you’re in, you're just a human being with the same frailties and the same imperfections as any other human. People ask me why I worked at NSA for so long. I had a 4-part answer: 1. Being part of an organization that has such an impact on this nation and our allies. 2. The intellectual challenge of working there - I learned something every day. It's such a complicated business. The intellectual challenge was immense. 3. Really great people - smart people, motivated people solving seemingly impossible problems. 4. You can be yourself. The most memorable mission experience I had that I can talk about was, as NSA's Chief of Counterterrorism, leading the team of NSA'ers supporting the Bin Laden operation (https://lnkd.in/epeGyA6F). I worked the better part of a decade from 9/11 to 2011 in CT. I never imagined when I was hired on that I would be in the middle of detecting and interrupting foreign terrorist plots targeting America and our allies. I still remember I was on a vacation somewhere driving across the U.S and thinking as I'm driving along that I'm helping to protect these people. It wasn't an esoteric thing, it was a real thing, helping keep our nation safe. - JD

- #StoriesofNSA - I am a third generation NSA-er. My mother and grandfather worked here and at their urging, I applied and was selected into the High School Work Study program in 1996. While I knew they worked at NSA, I didn’t realize the meaning; to me NSA was just a road sign on 295. It wasn’t until I started working here that I realized I was lucky to have landed the gig. Unlike my friends, I didn’t have to flip burgers or work retail, I left school mid-day and headed to an important office job. In fact, one day when I was leaving work to go practice with my high school golf team, I had a chance run-in with the NSA Director who asked me to join him for a round of golf as a last-minute fill-in. This is one of my favorite early NSA stories. If I'd known then what I know now, I probably would have let him win. I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up then but as I learned more about the opportunities NSA offered, it helped me realize I didn’t have to specialize in just one area. Over my career, with my roles touching several skill areas, I’ve been able to see NSA through multiple lenses and learn a lot about what the Agency does. As an added benefit, some of my work roles allowed me to travel the world. It’s a great culture too. There are so many opportunities for personal and professional development. You can pivot from job to job without ever changing employers and know you’re not stuck in one role until retirement. My Mom started as an Admin but finished her NSA career as a photographer, hanging from helicopters, DSLR in hand. One of the things I’ve enjoyed most here is the inclusivity and diversity of the NSA workforce. My wife and children are Puerto Rican and I’ve traveled to PR since 2008. Learning not only about their beautifully vibrant culture but also the island’s struggles led me to join the Agency’s Hispanic/Latino Employee Resource Group, to support the HLAT community and work with schools and Minority Serving Institutions, to promote and offer jobs and internships at NSA. Yes, it’s a government job with bureaucracy and red tape, but I like it and feel it's a secure and satisfying place to work. Parking isn’t always friendly at the Fort but once you’re there, you have access to cafeterias, gyms, sports leagues, and even an arcade. Another fun NSA anecdote: During my second year after giving a tour of our super computer facility to some high-level executives from a famous Florida resort, they asked if they could return the hospitality by offering us a tour of their facilities. So, myself and a few colleagues went TDY to a big resort and after our work was done, we got to walk all around the park. Looking back, I still smile and wonder how I even got there. Ultimately, when you show up to work you want to believe you're doing something that matters and I find it super fulfilling that I’m supporting my country and my work helps generate real, positive mission outcome.#nationalhispanicheritagemonth
