- Did you know indoor gardening enhances health? 💐 In previous studies, scientists unearthed health benefits that gardeners gain by digging in microbial-rich soil outdoors during spring and summer. Now, researchers in Finland found that indoor gardeners can get a similar health boost from soil microbes in winter. The researchers reported that just one month of indoor gardening was enough to increase the variety of skin bacteria, some of which fight infection. They also found higher levels of anti-inflammatory molecules in the indoor gardeners’ blood. - There's owlways that one sibling... 🦉🦉 Nelson identifies with these juvenile barred owl siblings, declared invasive in the Pacific Northwest. A lifelong U.S. citizen born in Japan, “my community was forcibly removed from about the same habitat [as the owls] for merely resembling the enemy during World War II,” he says. Nelson sees the owls, photographed in July 2023, as “charismatic fauna that open people to relationships with other beings and nature.” 🥇 Baby Animals | 📸 Glenn Nelson 2024 National Wildlife Photo Contest Winners 📲: https://ow.ly/k1FK50UAyEr #wildlife #photography #nature #underwater #photocontest
- Just Keep... Breathing 🛫 Did you know lungs help birds soar longer? 👀 In a groundbreaking discovery, researchers have identified a specialized air-filled sac attached to the lungs of soaring avian species, including such diverse birds as bald eagles, turkey vultures, brown pelicans, and western gulls. The structure seems to boost the power of these birds’ flight muscles while soaring, allowing them to remain aloft for long periods without flapping their wings. Called the subpectoral diverticulum, the air sac has evolved only in lineages of soaring birds.
