- There was no way for Judy Phelps to know that when she accepted a position as a data entry clerk for Clarkson Hospital, it would be the beginning of a four-decade career. After all, she was only 20 years old. “It’s kind of blown me away,” she says, when thinking about her 45th service anniversary. “I was too young to think ‘I’ll be here for life.’ I didn’t even know what the job was going to be.” Over her 45-year career, Judy, who is pictured with current and former co-workers, supported the work to ensure our organization’s expense and revenue data is accurate. She’s also supported department leaders in understanding their financial performance and assisted with any adjustments to their budgets. For the last six years, her accounting skills have been focused supporting the work of our grants and donations. “When I began working here 22 years ago, Judy had already been here for 23 years,” says Karen Kerstetter, director, Accounting and Treasury. “I would ask her questions over the wall of our cubicle. Judy is not just a co-worker but a great friend to me.” “I am so thankful that Judy is on our team,” adds supervisor Amanda Austin, manager, Accounting Services. “Congratulations on your 45th service anniversary, Judy!” “So many people have supported me over the years,” she adds. “I have been loyal to Nebraska Medicine, but it’s also been loyal to me.” Congratulations, Judy!
- “I feel like there has got to be something more that I can be doing because you don’t survive something like this for no reason." When back pain sent Pattie Wojtkiewicz looking for answers in 2017, she was shocked to learn she had pancreatic cancer. Nebraska Medicine is expanding access to its clinical care to meet demand in the community with a new clinic slated to open in fall of 2025. Nebraska Medicine – Bennington Health Center will be on the northwest corner of 156th and State streets and will offer primary care for the community. Construction will begin at that site in early December by JE Dunn and the site is being developed by Boldt Real Estate. The new building was designed by Altus Architectural Studios. In addition to primary care, Bennington Health Center will also offer Immediate Care services on weekday evenings, weekends and holidays. Providers and patients will work together improving health and wellness, and the facility will be open seven days a week to treat conditions such as coughs and colds, sore throats and earaches, minor cuts, respiratory illnesses and abdominal pain. The Bennington location will be the newest clinic in the growing Nebraska Medicine health network. In recent years, Nebraska Medicine has built new primary care locations in Millard, Elkhorn, North Omaha (Fontenelle and Girls Inc.), Chalco and Papillion. They will join more than a dozen other Nebraska Medicine health centers where families can find a primary care provider, stretching across Nebraska from Grand Island to Bellevue. - Does anyone like going to the doctor? Mitch Osborn does! And over the last decade, the Harlan High School basketball coach has battled not one but two kinds of cancer. Made hundreds of visits to the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center for treatment. But through it all, he always looks forward to seeing the friendly faces he's grown so close to over the years. He happily gave us a look at what makes the days he spends here so special.

- “They embody compassion and empathy in every interaction, leaving a lasting positive impact on patients and their families.” This month, two nursing leaders were honored with the DAISY Nurse Leader Award: Chad Himmelberg, nurse manager, Surgical ICU, Nebraska Medical Center, and Susan Tishendorf, swoop nurse for Nursing Administrative Resources, Bellevue Medical Center. The DAISY Nurse Leader Award is an annual award, created to celebrate the nursing leaders who create an environment where compassionate, skillful care thrives. It also honors those who value safety, quality and supporting nurses. Anyone can vote for this award, including patients and visitors. “Susan exemplifies extraordinary dedication and leadership in her role, consistently going above and beyond to ensure the highest quality of patient care,” wrote one of her nominators. “Susan responds swiftly to her patient’s needs. She collaborates seamlessly with interdisciplinary teams, encouraging open communication to ensure that all patients receive the comprehensive care they deserve. Her readiness to lend a helping hand has made her a trusted resource for both colleagues and patients.” “I just love being a resource to the staff,” says Susan. “It's fun to be a part of the growth of our graduate nurses and we have ‘raised’ some pretty great nurses. And the people we serve are from my community - exactly those I want to help and be a part of their experience.” “Chad is dedicated to his team and is determined to create a culture of safety and quality for his staff and the patients they serve,” wrote one of his nominators. “Chad is consistent and the calm in the storm. He arrives every morning at 6 a.m. so that night shift gets regular contact with management. When the unit is busy, Chad is intently looking for ways to help.” “I love the Teamwork and seeing our patients get better,” says Chad, when asked what he loves about working on the Surgical ICU. “I also love to see my colleagues grow in their confidence and help them achieve their professional goals.” Thank you, Chad and Susan, for the extraordinary care you share with patients and colleagues! #DaisyAward #Daisyleaders #NebraskaMed #NebraskaMedicine #seriousmedicineextraordinarycare #togetherextraordinary #nursing #nurses #nursingleaders
- If you know Dr. Matt Lunning, you may have noticed his hair was getting longer... and longer... and longer. The hematologist/oncologist has been growing it for the past two years. And while it certainly was a striking look, he wasn't doing it in the name of fashion. But today, the ponytail is no more. You won't want to miss the touching story behind its growth and removal:
