๐๏ธ A new paradigm is upon us! WEB SHOPS ARE ALL THE RAGE. App store policies have finally evolved to give developers more choice and control over how games monetize than ever before. In 2021, Epic Games led the charge against Apple's 30% platform fee and this month, major headway was made in the recent Epic v. Google filings (pending, of course, Google's appeal). The core premise is gatekeepers like Apple and Google are extracting more value from games not tantamount to the value they provide and have intentionally siloed competition for alternative app stores or payment methods. This has led to the rise of the "webshop", i.e. Shopify for games. Chris Faught and his team are building Neon, a direct-to-consumer platform for payments and fully customizable storefronts. Neon is live in 43 countries and is currently working with Theorycraft Games, Space Ape Games, PerBlue, Metacore, and many more! And yes, they do charge. It's just not 30%. We Discuss: ๐ต The Payment Stack in Gaming How does this actually work? What are payment gateway fees? What is a Merchant of Record? How do payments differ by geo or platform? ๐ Store Policies and Regulations What are the rules and regulations that usually trip a studio up? What are the consequences of breaking the rules? Key regulatory changes that have happened in the past 2 years. How are large companies like Take-Two, Playtika, and Scopely capitalizing on these changes? ๐งฎ Neon What is being built? What makes Neon different than other web payment providers? ๐ก Web Payments: Who and Why? Craig Chapple at PocketGamer.biz interviewed Justin Sacks and quoted that shifting 25% of a mobile DAU to a webshop could lead to an 8% increase in profitability. But is it all about cutting costs and margin expansion, or is there something else? Are there games that shouldn't use a web payment provider? When is the right time? Listen to the full episode on Naavik's Spotify, Apple, or YouTube in the comments. #videogames #webshops #d2c -

For the first time in our industry, app store policies have evolved to give developers more choice and control over how we monetize our games than ever before. The presence of D2C payments in gaming is only rising, and naturally, so is the competition. But for Naavik, there is one provider that particularly stood out -- Neon! What exactly stood out? Here are my top three things: #1: An ambitious mission to redefine revenue for game developers -- "We build commerce tools that help game developers become enduring brands." #2: Fully-customizable webshops that leverages best practices from the broader ecommerce industry, so as to ensure the player journey between game and web purchase is seamless, personalized, and conversion-optimized. #3: As โmerchant of recordโ (which is critical to be), Neon handles payments, tax, fraud, and support so that players can buy how they want. Today, Neon is trusted by some of the biggest names in gaming. And we're glad to welcome Chris Faught and his highly experienced team (Apple Pay, Shopify, Stripe, Supercell, Affirm etc.) as the newest partner of our Open Gaming Research Initiative! Also, a big thank you to Alexandra Takei for putting Neon on our radar. If you'd like an intro, DM or comment. And learn more about Neon here: https://lnkd.in/eqMH6-Yu
