About us

Mission The National Nordic Museum shares Nordic culture with people of all ages and backgrounds by exhibiting art and objects, preserving collections, providing educational and cultural experiences, and serving as a community gathering place. Vision The National Nordic Museum is an internationally recognized museum and cultural center where people of all backgrounds are welcomed to be inspired by the values, traditions, art, and spirit of the Nordic peoples. The National Nordic Museum is housed in a 57,000 sq. ft., purpose-built facility, which includes an interactive and immersive core exhibition, two classrooms, a craft studio, and a state-of-the art auditorium. Special exhibitions are presented in a dynamic 3,700 sq. ft. gallery, designed to accommodate world-class exhibitions from the national galleries of the Nordic countries.

• ❄️ A little bit of magic for your feed on this chilly Tuesday: architect Pasi Widgren has returned to Finland’s frozen Lake Pitkäjärvi to “draw” yet another winter masterpiece with his trusty shovel. Since 2016, Widgren's ephemeral designs have been meticulously etched on the lake’s surface, destined to return to nature with the next bout of fresh snow or melting ice.
  
• The Sámi Film Festival returns to Seattle this February 📽️ Now in its 7th year, the Festival celebrates the rich storytelling traditions of the Sámi—an Indigenous people of the northernmost parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula of Russia—through a diverse selection of new and classic cinema.   💫 Winter doesn’t have to be a season to simply “get through.” Take it from Kari Leibowitz, PhD, a Stanford-trained health psychologist who, in 2014, moved to Tromsø, Norway, to study what she calls "wintertime mindset." In Tromsø, where the sun doesn’t rise for two months, residents embrace the cold and darkness as a time of opportunity. Leibowitz explains that this shift in perspective helps reframe winter as cozy, magical, and refreshing, a mindset observed in her research throughout Scandinavia and the Nordic region. Kari will be hosting her much-anticipated “How to Winter” workshop virtually on January 7, where she’ll teach you how to develop your own winter mindset ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gJ4PceFx
